Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For March 1, 2016. Unfortunately in this leap year, still 325 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term but fortunately only 4 days until the start of and my daily updates on the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on Earth. Interesting theater today as the Reds and Blues head to the polls today for Super Tuesday and the Reds frantically try to figure out a way to derail Trump in a primary that is getting uglier and uglier each day. I trust your Tuesday is proving to be a great one; and as always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Janet Jackson, factoids of interest, a relevant quote from John Garamendi while looking forward to enjoying a bowl of fruit compote, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Self-Injury Awareness Day—observing usually by wearing an orange ribbon or writing “love” on one’s arm the dangers of self destructive behavior that we as humans should try to avoid.
2. National Pig Day—celebrating since 1972 the other white meat and probably one or our more intelligent domesticated food sources; sadly for the pigs to celebrate properly usually means a serving of bacon or pork chops.
3. 1990 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1990 on a run of three weeks in that position Escapade by Janet Jackson. Here is a link to Janet Jackson performing Escapade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFX3gQHIroU
4. National Fruit Compote Day—celebrating another way to enjoy one’s needed servings of fruit—in this case stewed with honey or sugar.
5. Traveler Is Not Always The Path To Acting Fame—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1954 of actor and director Ron Howard who attended USC but had the sense to leave to pursue his acting and director career.
On this day in:
a. 1781 the Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, an experiment which failed and fortunately was replaced with the Constitution and the United States of America.
b. 1872 Yellowstone was established as the world’s first national park.
c. 1917 the U.S. released the unencrypted text of the Zimmerman Telegram which promised support to Mexico if it made war with the U.S. which when coupled with unrestricted submarine warfare against U.S. was the last straw and led to the U.S. declaring war against Germany.
d. 1941 W47NV the first FM radio station in the U.S. began broadcasting.
e. 1995 Yahoo! was incorporated; still alive today although its days may be numbered. Reflections on what all Americans own: “Maybe you weren't born with a silver spoon in your mouth, but like every American, you carry a deed to 635 million acres of public lands. That's right. Even if you don't own a house or the latest computer on the market, you own Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and many other natural treasures.” John Garamendi, Democratic Congressman from California and another career politician.
