Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For March 11, 2016. Unfortunately in this leap year, still 315 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term but fortunately March Madness is almost with us and you can find daily updates and photos on the Iditarod at www.alaskanpoet.blogspot.com. Interesting theater last night during the Republican debate as the three dwarfs were trying desperately to derail the Trump train that just picked up another endorsement from Dr. Ben Carson. At least this time Trump was verging on appearing presidential although the media dogs of bias have been unleashed claiming Trump’s rhetoric is prompting attacks against a reporter and a black protestor sucker punched at a Trump rally. I trust your Friday is proving to be a great one; and as always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Will Smith, factoids of interest, a relevant quote from Crimethinc while looking forward to enjoying some noodles or munching on an apple in honor of the day, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Johnny Appleseed Day—commemorating the accomplishments of John Chapman, an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to a good part of the Midwest. To celebrate why not go to Ralph’s where a good number of apples are being sold for only $.99 a pound.
2. Worship of Tools Day—commemorating the need to possess a wide assortment of tools so instead of watching March Madness on the weekend one can spend the weekend attending to the items on one’s Honey Do List.
3. 1998 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1998 on a run of three weeks in that position Gettin’ Jiggy with It by Will Smith. Here is a link to Will Smith performing Gettin’ Jiggy with It: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JcmQONgXJM
4. National “Eat Your Noodles” Day—celebrating whether made from eggs, rice, or wheat, another great way to enjoy a meal especially if served in a bowl as pho or on a plate as chow mein or baked with tuna as a casserole.
5. An Exorcist for Her Might Have Helped—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1958 of a child actress Anissa Jones who starred in the sitcom Family Affair and auditioned for the lead role in The Exorcist but the role went to Linda Blair and at the age of 18 died of a drug over dose after a night of partying.
On this day in:
a. 1702 The Daily Courant, the first national daily in England was published for the first time and continued to be published until 1735 when it was merged into The Daily Gazetteer.
b. 1824 the U.S. Department of War established the Bureau of Indian Affairs which like most federal agencies has grown to become a bloated bureaucracy of almost 10,000 employees.
c. 1918 seven days after a cook at Fort Riley, Kansas reported he was sick and within 7 days 100 soldiers had been hospitalized and the Spanish Flu was off to the races in the world wide pandemic derby infecting in the next two years some 500 million people and killing some 50-100 million.
d. 1999 Infosys became the first Indian company to be listed on the NASDAQ.
e. 2011 a 9.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan near Sendai, Japan which triggered a massive tsunami which killed thousands and caused the second largest nuclear accident at the Fukashima Nuclear Power Plant causing the release of vast quantities of radioactive material.
Reflections on accidents whether caused by humans or caused by nature: “Accident - A statistical inevitability. Some nuclear power plants are built on fault lines, but ever mine, dam, oil rig, and waste dump is founded upon a tacit acceptance of the worst-case scenario. One a long enough timeline, everything that can go wrong will, however small the likelihood is from one day to the next. The responsible parties may wring their hands about the Fukushima meltdown - and the Gult of Mexico oil spill, and the Exxon Valdez, and Hurricane Katrina, and Chernobyl, and Haiti - but accident is no accident.” Crimethinc, a decentralized collective of wacko anaracists advancing the cause of chaos in the world.
