March 19, 2016 Ridley's Believe It Or Not First Day Of Spring

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For March 19, 2016. Unfortunately still 307 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term but fortunately March Madness began on Thursday for both men and women, including the Stanford women who play San Francisco tonight at 9:00 p.m.—go Cardinal! The Madness is in full force with favored Michigan State losing to Middle Tennessee, UNI beating Texas on a half court buzzer beater and the Pac 12 losing two teams Cal and Oregon State.   Although the Iditarod has been won, once again by Dallas Seavey for the fourth time in five years, there are still 4 mushers on the course resting in White Mountain 77 miles away so I will continue to post updates and photos on www.alaskanpoet.blogspot.com until the Red Lantern winner crosses the finish line in Nome. Great political theater as the demonstrators or agitators continue in Utah to try to shut Trump down and Hillary is “grilled” on inane subjects like whether she prefers pizza or hamburgers.  I trust your Saturday is proving to be a great one; and as always, I hope  you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to the Andrews Sisters, factoids of interest, a  relevant quote from Jim Bakker while looking forward to enjoying some poultry cooked in your favorite style, blessed with a positive attitude and  secure in  the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or  anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem  at a great price  tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Vernal Equinoxcelebrating the first day of spring.
2. International Astrology Day—celebrating the proclivity of many people to not start their day without checking their horoscope. Even the infamous or famous like Hitler or Nancy Reagan to consult with astrologers to plan campaigns or keep her husband safe.
3. 1945 Number One Song—heading back in time to flee from rap music to celebrate the number one song in 1945 on a run of seven weeks in that position Rum and Coca Cola by the Andrews Sisters. Here is a link to the Andrews Sisters  performing  Rum and Coca Cola: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGxL2uNr7bk
4. National Poultry Day—celebrating another great way to lower your cholesterol by eating chicken or turkey instead of beef.
5. Age Is A State Of Mind—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1917 of Payton Jordan, coach of the 1968 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team and long time coach of track and field team who set many sprinting records in the Masters Age division and who died at the ripe old age of 91.
On this day in:
a. 1918 the U.S. Congress established time zones and approved the implementation of Daylight Savings Time.
b. 1920 the U.S. Senate rejected the Versailles Treaty for the second time, ultimately dooming the League of Nations’ ability to stop aggression and aiding the drift to World War II.
c. 1931 gambling was legalized in Nevada.
d. 1954 Willie Mosconi aka “Mr. Pocket Billiards” at a straight pool exhibition held at the East High Billiard Club set a record which still stands of 526 balls without a miss.
e. 1987 due to a sex scandal involving Jessica Hahn, televangelist and con artist Jim Bakker resigned from the PTL Club and handed the reins over to Jerry Falwell. Bakker was prosecuted for mail fraud and served five years in a federal prison.                                  Apologies from the lips of a man seeking forgiveness:  “The more I studied the Bible, however, I had to admit that the prosperity message did not line up with the tenor of Scripture. My heart was crushed to think that I led so many people astray. I was appalled that I could have been so wrong, and I was deeply grateful that God had not struck me dead as a false prophet!” Jim Bakker, I Was Wrong
