Ridley's Believe It Or Not—September 4, 2014: Trust
your Thursday is proving to be a good one and that you enjoy the holidays selected
along with the factoids and quote from Peter Drucker with a smile on your
sunscreened face, a positive attitude
and a few macadamia nuts in your hand, secure in the knowledge that if you want
to find a gift for a memorable event, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide
you with a unique customized poem tailored to the event and the recipient.
Great game by the Cardinal last Saturday but unfortunately also great game by
the resurgent Trojans—will be interesting at the Farm this Saturday as the
Cardinal is favored by 2 ½ points. Go Cardinal!
1. Newspaper Carrier Day—commemorating the hiring of the first
paperboy Barney Flaherty in 1833 by the New York Sun to deliver
newspapers; God help us if we ever lose a free press and the ability to deliver
its product.
2. L.A. Birthday—celebrating the founding of
Los Angeles on this day in 1781.
3. Latimer Day—celebrating
the birthday on this day of Lewis Howard Latimer, an escaped slave born on this
day in 1848 who became an inventor with several patents, including a means to
manufacture the carbon filament used in light bulbs.—another proof of that
maxim that a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
4. Tweet
And You May Die Day –bemoaning the birthday on this day in 1964 of
Anthony Weiner, a really pathetic and despicable congressman, who resigned from
Congress due to his, while married to an expecting wife, tweeting of sexual proposals to women on the
internet. He also had the gall after resignation to run for NYC Mayor and was
soundly rejected.
5. National
Macadamia Nut Day—honoring one of the really tasty nuts found on this
planet; cheapest place to find these tasty morsels is probably at a local
Trader Joes.
On this day in
a. 1882 Thomas Edison flipped the switch to turn on the first power plant in
history to bring electricity to one square mile of Lower Manhattan, marking
the beginning of the electrical age.
b. 1888 George Eastman registers a trademark for Kodak and receives a patent
for a camera that uses film rolls.
c. 1957 in defiance of Brown
v. Board of Education, Governor Orval Faubus of Arkansas called out the
Arkansas National Guard to block the admission of nine African American
students to Little Rock’s Central High School, which resulted in a very
displeased President Eisenhower sending in the 101st Airborne to
insure the students admission and for good measure nationalize the Arkansas
National Guard.
d. 1957 in a moment that Ford
would later regret, the company introduced the Edsel.
Drucker’s
view on advertising: “As to the idea that advertising motivates people,
remember the Edsel.” Peter Drucker, noted management consultant and author
