Ridley's Believe It Or Not—September 3, 2014: Trust
your Wednesday is proving to be a good one and that you enjoy the holidays selected
along with the factoids and quote from Federico Garcia Lorca with a smile on
your sunscreened face, a positive
attitude and a tasty warm Welsh rarebit in your hand, secure in the knowledge
that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event, you know that the
Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem tailored to the event
and the recipient. Great game by the Cardinal last Saturday but unfortunately
also great game by the resurgent Trojans—will be interesting at the Farm this
Saturday as the Cardinal is favored by 2 ½ points. Go Cardinal!
1. Merchant Navy Day (UK)/ Merchant Navy Remembrance Day (Canada)—commemorating
the contributions of the merchant navies of these two nations to their
economies and honoring the sacrifice of those thousands of seamen who lost
their lives during WWI and WWII due to Axis surface ships, submarines and
aircraft.
2. U.S. League Bowling Day—celebrating the
sport of league bowling established here around 1895 with the establishment of modern
bowling in New York City—still a fun way to spend some time with your family,
especially now that smoking is now banned in most bowling alleys and one’s eyes
are not assaulted by the polyester shirts bowlers years ago used to wear.
3. Skyscraper Day—honoring one of the great marvels
of engineering—the skyscraper, the tallest of which is located in Dubai and is
more than one half mile high.
4.
Welsh Rarebit Day –celebrating a snack whose name belies what it is—here
toast covered with melted cheese, a very popular pub snack in the United
Kingdom.
5. There
Is No Substitute Day—honoring the birthday on this day in 1875 of one of
the iconic engineers Ferdinand Porsche, founder of Porsche.
On this day in
a. 301 San Marino, one of the world’s smallest nations at 24 square miles and
its oldest republic still in existence was founded by Saint Marinus.
b. 1895 Dave Brailler became the first American football player to be paid
for his services, receiving $10 ($285 in 2014 dollars) to play for the
Latrobe Athletic Association in its 12-0 win over the Jeanette Athletic
Association—amazing how far salaries for pros have come although in 1895 the
average wage in the U.S. was only about one dollar a day, making ten dollars
for two or so hours of work a princely sum.
c. 2004 the Beslan school
hostage crisis in Russia ended after three days with over 300 deaths more
than half of whom were children following the storming of the school by
Russian security forces, resulting in
consolidation of power by Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin and allegations by
the U.S. that Putin was using the tragedy to roll back many democratic that
had been instituted in Russia following the collapse of the Soviet
Union—clear indication of the measure of the ruthless nature of the man we
are dealing with today.
Interesting
observation on skyscrapers that reach in the heavens and blot out the sun
that only a poet could provide. “There is nothing more poetic and terrible
than the skyscrapers’ battle with the heavens that cover them.” Federico
Garcia Lorca. One of the most noted Spanish poets and dramatists of the 20th
Century
