Ridley's Believe It Or Not—September 17. 2014: Trust
your Wednesday is proving to be a good one and that you enjoy the holidays and factoids
and quote from John Adams which is so on point as a prediction that is
frightening with a smile on your sunscreened face, a positive attitude, secure
in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event, you
know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem
tailored to the event and the recipient. For only a dollar you can buy a copy
of the Constitution—worth reading!
1. Constitution Day—celebrating the signing of one of the great
documents of governance of all times, the U.S. Constitution, on this day in
1787.
2. Operation Market Garden Day---commemorating
Montgomery’s failed but audacious attempt to end the war and memorialized by
Cornelius Ryan’s book made into a great war movie A Bridge Too Far.
3. Merry
Pranksters Day—commemorating the
birthday on this day in 1935 of Ken Kesey one of the iconic authors of the 60s
in classics like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (movie adaptation led
to an Oscar for Jack Nicholson).
4. National
Apple Dumpling Day—not sure where this came from but sounds exotic enough to try.
On this day in
a. 1983 Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America.
b. 1991 the first version of the Linux kernel was released.
c. 2001 the New York Stock
Exchange after being closed on 911 reopened; the closure marked the longest
time the NTSE had been closed since the Great Depression.
d. 2011 the Occupy Wall Street
movement began in Zuccotti Park, New York City.
Talk
about a prediction into the future right on point: “There is nothing which I
dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each
arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each
other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest
political evil under our Constitution.” John Adams, second President of the
United States Sadly that is where we are today, which explains why our
government is so dysfunctional.
