Ridley's Believe It Or Not September 2, 2020
CV World Cases: The CV pandemic across the planet continues with 304,480 new cases (a 1.18% increase compared to a 1.0% increase yesterday) to bring the total over 26 million to 26,077,220 cases, 6,893,345 of which are active, 19,183,875 of which have been closed with 18,319,699 recoveries (95.50% compared to yesterday’s 95.46%) and 864,176 deaths (4.50% compared to yesterday’s 4.54%) to continue the trend of increased recovery percentages and decreased mortality percentages.
CV USA Cases: New cases of 52,009 with total cases over 6 million at 6,276,338 (a .84% increase compared to yesterday’s .56% increase) with 2,573,652 active cases of which 15,088, on a downward trend with slight blips from over 19,000 in the last 5 weeks (15,881 yesterday and 16,885 on August 1), are in serious or critical condition as trend continues to go down, and 3,702,686 closures, 189,399 of which have been deaths (5.12% compared to yesterday’s 5.15%) and 3,513,287 of which have been recoveries (94.88% compared to yesterday’s 94.85%) (our death rate percentages continue to improve and are finally in single digits since Cuomo repealed on May 10 his order sending CV positive patients to nursing homes and ADL facilities and on a deaths per million population measurement at 572 ranks behind Peru (880), Belgium (853) Spain (624), UK (611), Chile (593) Italy (587), and Sweden (576), now 6 behind Brazil (578) and only slightly worse than Mexico (505). We have now conducted 84,051,039 83,292,959 tests (more than (758,000 more tests than those done yesterday and now at 253,669/M compared to Russia at 254,205/M).
Non CV Case News: Pelosi is rightfully getting blasted for her Marie Antoinette like elitist disregard of mere mortals banned from hair salons and barbers while she ignores salon shut down orders with her armed security behind her goes in for probably a high priced visit most women could not afford to have her hair styled and maybe colored to prevent the gray from showing that Botox will not prevent (stung by the outrage Pelosi “apologized” not for breaking the shutdown orders but for falling for a set up that induced her to have her hair style); Hidin’ Biden has been rolling in the campaign dough but in Wisconsin especially in Kenosha, the ground zero for riots donors are flocking to Trump not Biden (safety sells riots and burning and looting do not); Michael Banta, an Antifa member known as “Commander Red” revealed what many of us law abiding citizens have suspect that he and his movement are a bunch of cowardly thugs as upon being arrested for carrying a flame thrower like device in Kenosha assumed the fetal position and started crying; any doubt that AOC is not the top dog of the Blues was ended yesterday as Senator Markey beat the grandson of Robert Kennedy, Joe Kennedy III in the Blue primary as Markey’s campaign revolved around and was completely dependent on her endorsement (AOC with her youth and energy makes the Botox Queen look like an out of touch elitist); Chris Wallace of Fox will moderate the first Presidential Debate (assuming Biden does not fake a positive CV test and require lengthy quarantine); in a sign that the travel industry is hurting big time still, United Airlines announced it would furlough over 16,000 employees in October.
Chicago/Baltimore Gun Violence: In Chicago as of September 1, 2020, the number of shootings increased to 2,825 of whom 478 have died (total travesty of BLM when blacks are shot and killed by blacks in droves and only sounds of silence and complete absence of any protests in front of City Hall demanding action to curb the killings and shootings); Baltimore with a fraction of Chicago’s population and hoping against all hopes that 2020 will not be a record in terms of deaths but now seems to be shooting less and killing less and is now 260 behind Chicago at 218 murders (when will Chicago and Baltimore get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color and when will the left focus on the problem of color on color shootings in Blue run cities which have been way more deadly and way more numerous than shootings by police or by random mass shootings which occur with significantly less frequency?).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, factoids of interest for this day in history, a musical link to “Smoke, Smoke, Smoke! That Cigarette” by Tex Williams, the fact that you do not suffer from phaneromania, and a quote by Marc W. Kohler on why we celebrate Victory over Japan Day, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like Father’s Day, college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Victory over Japan Day—celebrating the signing of the surrender documents by officials from the Empire of Japan and the Allies on the aft deck of the USS Missouri finally bringing an end to World War II.
2. Global Talent Acquisition Day—created by the Association of Talent Acquisition Professionals and KRT Marketing on August 16, 2018 and first celebrated on September 5, 2018 and thereafter on the first Wednesday in September to honor the efforts of recruiters and search firms to match talent with organizations needing talent to fill positions.
3. 1947 Number One Song— the number 1 song in 1947 on a run of 6 weeks was “Smoke, Smoke, Smoke! That Cigarette” by Tex Williams. Here us a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Zh_WvkhVd8. Could not discover whether Tex was a smoker but did learn he battled cancer for a year, had his gall bladder removed and died of kidney failure on October 11, 1985 at age 68.
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “phaneromania” which is the obsession of biting one’s fingernails to the dismay of manicurists.
5. Two Personalities Not a Great Thing--celebrating the birth on this day in 1975 of heavy metal band singer Jill Janiszewski better known to her fans as Jill Janus an appropriate assumed surname as she suffered from bipolar disorder and Janus is the Roman God of looking forward looking backward. Jill sadly committed suicide on August 14, 2018 at age 42.
On this day in:
a. 1901 Vice President Roosevelt at the Minnesota State Fair uttered these famous words to describe his thoughts on foreign policy, “Speak softly but carry a big stick.”
b. 1935 The Labor Day Hurricane aka Hurricane Number Three made landfall at Long Key. Florida to kill some 400 people and cause $100 million in damages ($1,891,248,175 in today’s dollars).
c. 1963 CBS Evening News became the first news program to be expanded from 15 minutes to 30.
d. 1987 Mathias Rust who had piloted a Cessna from Helsinki and avoided Soviet air defenses and landed in Red Square went on trial to be convicted for illegal border crossing and sentenced to 4 years of which he served 14 months before being pardoned.
e. 2013 the Eastern Span Replacement of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake after incredible construction delays finally opened to traffic after the expenditure of $6.5 billion, a 2500% increase over the original budget which should cause great hesitation for proceeding with Brown’s pet project the Bullet Train.
Reflections on celebrating Victory over Japan Day: “The tragedy here is that the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima are the preeminent memories of World War II for both Americans and Japanese. Why are the deaths of millions of people ignored while we keep hearing about our using the A-Bomb? We can forgo V-J Day if and when Japan makes its own history known to its citizens.” Marc W. Kohler, artist and art instructor in a letter to the editor of the Providence Journal.
