January 8, 2017 Ridley's Believe It or Not War on Poverty Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For January 8, 2017  70 shootings in Chicago through January 7, 2017 with another 2 in the early hours of January 8 and the mayor, governor of Illinois and for that matter the CPD seem totally helpless or maybe because most of the victims are black shot by fellow blacks indifferent (President-elect Trump  hit the nail on the head and threatened to involve the feds although the proper response should be the Illinois National Guard and assuming Chicago withdrew its sanctuary city status millions of dollars to put more police on the streets);tragic news out of Jerusalem as the Nice and Berlin attacks were copycatted by a Palestinian in a truck killing 4 Israeli soldiers and wounding 15 caught on video (no wonder Israel is reluctant to follow the land for peace mantra of the UN); may only be optics but another company Fiat Chrysler just announced that it would invest $1 billion in the U.S. and create 2,000 jobs (will go for naught if the Blues continue to wage holy war to prevent tax reduction and job-killing regulatory reform); Toyota has come under President-elect Trump’s wrath focus with its announcement of plans to increase production of its Tacoma truck line in Tijuana as opposed to adding to production capacity here in the U.S. (Blues should start urging boycott of any Tacoma built in Mexico in an effort to bring deserted UAW voters); brace yourself for major theater as confirmation hearings start on Tuesday for President-elect Trump’s  selections for cabinet choices as Schumer’s Blues warm up their objections to the premier event the confirmation hearing to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court (Schumer has already indicated he wants to delay any confirmation vote on any selection to SCOTUS until the results of the 2018 election); a suspect caught on a video surveillance camera has been arrested for wounding a U.S. Consulate official in Guadalajara, Mexico; CNN often known as the Clinton News Network due to its leftist bias had the audacity to have one of its panelists Symone Sanders claim that just because the victim of torture and kidnapping was disabled and white and the four thugs on tape were yelling “f* white people” and “f*Trump ” that the torture was not a hate crime merely someone expressing displeasure over President-elect Trump‘s election and policies (huh); ending on a positive note showing that there still is some humanity left in this crazy world, a cashier at a grocery store in Temecula invited a regular patron Andy Robinson, a child who suffers from cerebral palsy to help scan some items being purchased (made his day).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Olivian Newton-John, factoids of interest for this day in history, relevant observations on the War on Poverty from Coumo, Ehrenreich and Reagan from Jo Brand, looking forward to enjoying an all you can eat buffet to put to use the Word of the Day “ingurgitate,” blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
          1. International Typing Day—this is an observance honoring since 2011 speed and accuracy in the creation of the written work and coincides with a speed and typing contest held on this day in Malaysia (who among us can type on a keyboard at the rate of 146 words per minute for five minutes?).
          2. War on Poverty Day—commemorating President Lyndon Johnson’s declaration as part the Great Society on this day in 1964 “the War on Poverty” which despite the spending of trillions of dollars over 52 years has not been able to achieve victory only a massive increase of national debt especially under our departing president.
          3. Number One Song in 1982—celebrating the number 1 song in 1982 on a long run of 10 weeks in that position “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John. Here is a link to her performing the song:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWz9VN40nCA                                   4. Word of the Day—the word of the day is “ingurgitate” which means to swallow something greedily like what formerly Blue voters did in rust belt states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin when hearing President-elect President-elect Trump ’s message of bringing back jobs to America and reforming taxes and regulations to create jobs.
          5. Rock and Roll to the Max--celebrating the birth on this day in 1931 in Berlin of Wolfgang Wolodia Grajonca, better known to lovers of live music performances by such bands as the Rolling Stones, the Doors, the Grateful Dead and the Eagles as Bill Graham who sadly was killed in the Bay Area when a helicopter he was riding in crashed into a power line killing all aboard in 1991.
 On this day in:
1. 1697 the last execution for blasphemy occurred with the execution of student Thomas Aikenhead at Edinburgh (if radical Islam follows the same time path before it becomes tolerant mankind is going to have to wait until the 2400’s for it to regain sanity).
2. 1835 for the first time the U.S. national debt stood at zero and remained at that level until the Panic of 1837 forced the federal government to start borrowing again to fund its operations.
3. 1973 in the beginning of the end for the Nixon presidency began with the commencement of the trial of seven Republican operatives for the break-in of the Democratic headquarters at the Watergate.
4. 1982 AT&T agreed to divest itself of its 22 Bell subsidiaries.
5. 2011 Jarad Loughner attempted to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, wounding her in the head, and killing six and wounding an additional 12 others at a Safeway parking lot in Casas Adobe, Arizona; he is currently serving life in prison.
Reflections on the War on Poverty: “There never was a war on poverty, maybe a skirmish on poverty.” Andrew Cuomo  “Middle-class-led reform movements, from the Progressive Era to the War on Poverty, have been marred by an elitist distance from the would-be beneficiaries of reform.” Barbara Ehrenreich, noted American author and political activist “Several years ago the federal government declared a war on poverty and poverty won.” Ronald Reagan Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and follow me) and follow my blogs.
