January 13, 2017 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Korean-American Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For January 13, 2017  While mostly black on black shooting have killed 672 victims in Chicago in over 4,000 shootings, the DOJ as might be expected of a highly politicized department has castigated the CPD for the use of excessive force against minorities; if you wondered what kind of ideologue we in California would be burdened with our new junior senator, Kamala Harris left no doubt of how bad her term is going to be during the confirmation hearings for the new CIA director spending her whole time playing cross examining attorney to grill him on climate change, Muslim, gay and transgender rights and completely ignoring the threats from Russia, China, North Korea Iran and radical Islam we face; Senator Franken once again misunderstood the Senate is not a comedy venue by ranting and raving over a procedural vote on starting the process of repealing the albatross of all albatrosses on the American public and the businesses that want to expand, Obamacare; news circulating that George Soros may have lost $1 billion with his bearish outlook after President-elect Trump’s win (bet against America Soros and you deserve every loss you suffered); in a sad but refreshing moment that we are not alone in the PC madness destroying this country, the British Home Secretary has run afoul of the PC police who have lodged a complaint that her speech calling for a restriction of immigration especially immigration that takes jobs from British citizens is a hate crime; President-elect Trump’s pledge to drain the swamp may have to be expanded to drain what is looking like more and more a highly politicized intel community to the detriment of our national security as more revelations surface over the discredited dossier on President-elect Trump that was leaked by intel officials; have not been able to update to see how many black victims have been added to the list of 100 shootings in Chicago but have confirmed that through January 11, 2017 13 black males have been shot to death in Chicago (where is the outrage of the BLM, where is this feckless mayor, where is the governor—a total failure of law and order in Blue run city for decades—no wonder blacks started voting for President-elect Trump; on the sports front after having to go without a pro team for years, Los Angeles will now be blessed with two as the Chargers will be moving from San Diego to Los Angeles (actually given the resurgence of USC with their new phenom quarterback, some might argue we have three teams).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Dionne and Friends, factoids of interest for this day in history, an  observation on North Korea by Barbara Demick, looking forward to not having an occasion to use the Word of the Day “misogamy,” blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
          1. Stephen Foster Memorial Day—this is a day created by act of Congress to honor since 1967 the most influential American songwriter of the 19th Century with such songs as “Oh Susanna,” “Camptown Races,” and “My Old Kentucky Home.”
          2. Korean-America Day—commemorating the immigration of Koreans to this nation that started occurring in 1883 and their contribution to the culture and economic well being of this nation by those who obeyed the law and did not enter this country illegally.
          3. Number One Song in 1986—celebrating the number 1 song in 1986 on a run of 4 weeks in that position “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne and Friends. Here is a link to her ad hoc group band performing the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyTpu6BmE88
         4. Word of the Day—the word of the day is “misogamy” which means the hatred of marriage which is misplaced as the true hatred should be a hatred of divorce and the family law lawyers that bring havoc and ruin along with their exorbitant fees to the suffering couple and their children.
          5. A Don’t Bet on the Nags, Train Them--celebrating the birth on this day in 1953 of Bob Baffert noted trainer of Triple Crown Winner American Pharaoh.
 On this day in:
1. 1842 William Brydon, an assistant surgeon with the British East India Company is the only survivor of an army of 4,500 burdened with 12,000 camp followers that tried to flee from Kabul, Afghanistan.
2. 1888 the National Geographic Society was founded in Washington, D.C.
3. 1942 Henry Ford in a visionary moment typical of the man, obtained a patent for a plastic automobile which was 30% lighter than a car built from steel.
4. 1978 the FDA required all blood donations to be labeled as either “paid” or “volunteer.”
5. 2012 in a massive “oops” moment of navigational error and negligence, the cruise ship Costa Concordia sank off the coast of Italy, killing 32 passengers.
Reflections on the living hell that is North Korea on a day when we marvel and admire the creativity and prosperity of the South Koreans: “A coal miner from Chongjin whom I met in 2004 in China told me, ‘People are not stupid. Everybody thinks our own government is to blame for our terrible situation. We all know we think that and we all know that everybody else thinks that. We don't need to talk about it.’” Barbara Demick Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea.  Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and follow me) and follow my blogs.
