c. 1957 the tyrant “Papa Doc” Duvalier was elected president of Haiti to the ultimate dismay of some 30,000 Haitians murdered on his orders.
d. 1993 a barge struck a railroad bridge in Mississippi leading to a derailment of the Sunset Limited and the death of 47 passengers and sadly for trainophiles the termination of service from New Orleans to Orlando, Florida.
e. 2013 in yet another display of barbarism by radical Islamists, a suicide bomber killed at least worshippers at a church at Peshawar, Pakistan.
