September 19 History International Coastal Cleanup Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—September 19, 2015 Trust your weekend is off to a great start, looking forward to your college or pro football teams winning (Go Cardinal against the Trojans!)  and as always I hope you enjoy Saturday’s holidays and observances,  factoids of interest,  a music video  by John Waite,  a relevant poem by the Alaskanpoet, looking forward to enjoying  a bowl of butterscotch pudding, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
          1. Talk Like A Pirate Day —”Arrrh,Ahoy Matey.” Here is a whimsical observance to talk like a pirate even if you do not have a parrot, peg leg, or eye patch—given the rapacious nature of our politicians who want to spend increasing amounts of our hard earned cash this is an observance that should be mandatory daily in Washington and Sacramento.
           2. International Coastal Cleanup Day—sadly our oceans have become the globe’s largest garbage dump which spills over on to our beaches and coasts and today is the 30th anniversary of thousands of volunteers around the world going to the coasts to clean up millions of pounds of trash.
           3. 1984 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1984 on a brief run of one week in that position Missing You  by John Waite.  Here is a link to John Wait performing Missing You: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9e157Ner90
           4.  National Butterscotch Pudding Day—celebrating another great way to end a meal.
           5.  California Dreaming Dreams—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1941 of Mama Cass Elliot of the Mamas and Papas who given her obesity died far too early at
the age of 32.                                                                                                                  On this day in:
            a. 1692 81 year old Giles Corey achieved the dubious distinction of being pressed to death (process took two days) for refusing to plead during the Salem Witchcraft Trials; but in so dying prevented his heirs from being deposed of his estate if he were found guilty and then hung or burned to death.
          b. 1778 the Continental Congress passed the first federal budget (could not find the exact amount but certain that it was a fraction of the bloated amount we have today).
            c. 1952 in a great blow against tolerance, the United States denied Charlie Chaplin from reentry into the United States.
            d. 1982 Scott Feldman posted the world’s first emoticons :-) and  :-( on the Carnegie Mellon University bulletin board system.
            e. 2010 BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill was officially declared sealed after approximately five million barrels of oil had been released into the Gulf of Mexico.
Reflections on Coastal Cleanup Day
To calm one’s soul, go to the ocean to hear the waves crash
To dampen one’s spirits, walk along a beach strewn with ocean borne trash
Join thousands around the globe to clean up the coast
An act truly worthy of a well-deserved boast!
