1. World Peace Day —promoting peace and the absence of violence since 1982, but as we can see from the videos of the thousands fleeing from the barbarism of Assad and ISIS, the world is not doing a great job on observing this holiday.

2. World Alzheimer’s Day—promoting awareness of and need to find a cure for a really scary disease which if we live to be 85 all of us will have a one third chance of coming down with it.
3. 1986 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1986 on a run of three weeks in that position Stuck with You by Huey Lewis and the News. Here is a link to Huey Lewis and the News performing Stuck with You: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J08ZwySCoJ8
4. National Pecan Cookie Day—celebrating another classic way to consume pecans.
5. Hard to Observe World Peace Day with the War of the Worlds—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1866 of the “Father of Science Fiction,” H.G. Wells, author of such noted works as The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man.
On this day in:
a. 1897 the editorial “Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus,” was published in the New York Sun.
b. 1937 J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit was published.
c. 1942 the B-29 Super Fortress, the plane that would knock Japan out of the war made its maiden flight, followed 22 years later by the last of the non stealth bombers advancing the idea that the bomber would always get through, the Mach 3 XB-70 Valkyrie, before the Soviets developed advanced surface to air missiles capable of reaching heights of 100,000 feet.
d. 1972 President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law in the Philippines subjecting its people to years of torture, corruption and graft and the spectacle of his wife accumulating thousands of designer shoes while Filipinos were barely making ends meet.
e. 2013 in yet another display of barbarism, al-Shabaab Islamic radicals attacked the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, killing at least 67 people most of which were Christians.
Reflections on Alzheimer’s disease and those who must be caregivers: “To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors.”
