b.1914  the Federal Trade Commission was established.

            e. 1981 Nolan Ryan set a Major League record by pitching his 5th no hitter which record he broke again twice by pitching two more no hitters before retiring.
Reflections on the impact of televised presidential candidates on the electoral process: "Before the television debates most Americans didn't even see the candidates — they read about them, they saw photos of them. This allowed the public to judge candidates on a completely different basis. It's a reality that continues to influence campaigns today. When parties are considering their candidates they ask: Who would look better on TV? Who comes across better? Who can debate better? This has been taken into the calculus." Larry Sabato, political analyst for the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia I you have any doubt over the wisdom of that statement, look to the collapse of Scott Walker due to his debate performance contrasted with the meteoric rise of Carly Fiorina and Doctor Ben Carson.

Our faith sought the harmony of man with his surroundings; the other sought the dominance of surroundings. For us, the world was full of beauty; for the other, it was a place to be endured until he went to another world. But we were wise. We knew that man's heart, away from nature, becomes hard.” Chief Luther Standing Bear

           2. World Car Free Day—promoting the use of alternative forms of transportation like walking, bikes and buses as a means to cut down on carbon emissions and put more money in a consumer’s pocket.
           3. 1987 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1987 on a run of two weeks in that position Didn’t We Almost Have It All by Whitney Houston.  Here is a link to Whitney Houston performing Didn’t We Almost Had It All: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_4PlM85NJo

On this day in:
             a. 1888 the first issue of the National Geographic Magazine was published.
           b. 1896 Queen Victoria passed her grandfather King George III as the longest serving British monarch; her record was just surpassed by Queen Elizabeth II who is still serving today to the dismay of her son who may never become king.
            c. 1957 the tyrant “Papa Doc” Duvalier was elected president of Haiti to the ultimate dismay of some 30,000 Haitians murdered on his orders.
            d. 1993 a barge struck a railroad bridge in Mississippi leading to a derailment of the Sunset Limited and the death of 47 passengers and sadly for trainophiles the termination of service from New Orleans to Orlando, Florida.
            e. 2013 in yet another display of barbarism by radical Islamists, a suicide bomber killed at least worshippers at a church at Peshawar, Pakistan.
Reflections on women in business from a female CEO:”Walt Disney told his crew to ‘build the castle first’ when constructing Disney World, knowing that vision would continue to serve as motivation throughout the project. Oftentimes when people fail to achieve what they want in life, it’s because their vision isn’t strong enough.” – Gail Blanke, President and CEO, Lifedesigns
