Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For August 13, 2019 The news of
demonstrations in Hong Kong and the shutdown of its international airport have
moved the news cycle for the shootings in El Paso and Dayton and the death of
Epstein in federal custody by suicide, foul play or national causes as
thousands of protestors are protesting against police using pepper spray
against a law giving China the right to extradite people charged with crimes
against the regime (the true face of Chinese oppression rears its ugly head by
denying rights granted to Hong Kong residents in an agreement signed by China
and Great Britain calling for the turnover of Hong Kong to China); the Trump
Administration has postponed tariffs on 10% of the goods, mostly high tech that
were to go into effect on December 15 with the result that the market is
soaring; Warren and Harris are making fools of themselves as usual commenting
on the 5 year anniversary of the “murder” of Michael Brown by Ferguson police
officer Derek Wilson as an example of racism prevailing in this country; several
high power Blues have issued veiled threats that if SCOTUS does not “heal” itself
it will be restructured (just exactly what we do not need is an attempt ala FDR
to politicize SCOTUS which has been a break on the leftist runaway judges like those of the 9th Circuit who
have obstructed Trump at every moment on issues like border security; Don Lemon
has been hit with a sexual assault civil case brought by a bartender who claimed
Lemon put his hands down his shorts and then stuck them under the bartender’s
face; CNN’s Chris Cuomo is being blasted for losing it and screaming at a man
who called him “Fredo” (Chris once again shows he is a hack masquerading as a
journalist); we still have over a year before the elections but Blues such as
Sanders, Biden, Gillibrand and Castro are advocating a gun buyback program
which many fear is the first step in the confiscation of firearms owned by law
abiding citizens; noted entrepreneur Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX and Tesla has
endorsed Andrew Yang in his quest for president (nothing like adding some more
excitement to an already crowded field and wondering if Schultz, noted
entrepreneurial success story with Starbucks might be persuaded to throw his
hat in); Epstein may be dead but the scandal surrounding his perverted
pedophile acts lives on with Chrislaine Maxwell now in the cross hairs over her
alleged role in procuring underage girls; in another example of misplaced
priorities, the residents of Newark have been struggling with excessive lead levels
in their water system have been told that the filters installed have not fixed
the problem and must use bottled water (but in this Blue controlled city,
concern over the well being of illegals dominates the campaigns of Blue presidential
candidates); in Chicago through August 12, 2019, 1716 people mostly of color
have been shot by mostly people of color, 286 of whom have died but none in the
last two days, a fraction of those dead from murders in Cape Town,
South Africa but barely leading the 212 murdered in Baltimore (when will
Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a
Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of
color by people of color?)
As always,
I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to
Madonna, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that you
are not a piteous person and a relevant quote from Gore Vidal on the Berlin
Wall, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any
memorable events like Father’s Day, college graduations, birthdays, weddings,
or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a
unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the
recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. International Left Handers Day—created by Dean R. Campbell, founder
of the International Lefthanders Association on this day in 1976 to address the
unique characteristics of and the difficulties faced living in a right handed
world by the 7 to10% of the population that are left handed.
2. National Filet Mignon Day—not sure who created this day but more likely than not it was a
restaurant that specialized in steaks and not vegetarian or vegan fare and
should be celebrated by splurging at Ruth Chris, Mortons or the Outback and
ordering a juicy filet mignon.
3. 1992 Number One Song— the number one song in 1992 on a run of 1 week in that
position was “This Used to Be My Playground” by Madonna. Here is a
recording video of her singing the song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WdzR2VKa8A Still growing
strong in her sixties and hasn’t yet blown up the White House to the dismay of
her leftist fans.
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “piteous” which means arousing or
deserving sympathy or pity which is something most of the Blue presidential
candidates do not merit.
5. From A Child Star To Super Star—celebrating the
birth on this day in 1963 of Indian super star actress Strivi Kapoor who was
one of India’s most famous film actresses but died too early of accidental
drowning in her hotel bathroom in Dubai at the age of 54.

On this day in:
a. 1918 women were allowed to
enlist in the United States Marine Corps for the first time with Opha May
Johnson becoming the first woman to enlist and was deenrolled after the end of
World War I with the rank of sergeant.
b. 1992 Major General Reybold of the
Army Corps of Engineers authorized the commencement of construction of the
facilities to build the atom bomb pursuant to the Manhattan Project.
c. 1961 East Germany
closed the borders between East and West Berlin and began constructing the
Berlin Wall to prevent East Berliners from fleeing to West Berlin.
d. 1964 Peter Allen and Gywnne Evans had the dubious distinction
of being the last people in the U.K. to be hanged for murder of John Allen West
which execution occurred a little over 4 months after Allen and Evans were
arrested for West’s murder.
e. 1969 the Apollo 11 Astronauts
enjoyed a ticker tape parade in New York City following their landing on the
Moon and were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard
Nixon later that evening.
Reflections
on the impact of the Berlin Wall: “In
August 1961, I visited President Kennedy at Hyannis Port. The Berlin Wall was
going up, and he was about to begin a huge military buildup - reluctantly, or
so he said, as he puffed on a cigar liberated by a friend from Castro's Cuba.”
Gore Vidal, noted author and playqwright
