Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For September 9, 2018 Serena Williams
trying to tie Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam victories at the U.S. Open
instead had a meltdown, broke her racket and was fined $17,000 in her loss to
Naomi Osaka, the first Japanese-American to win a U.S. Open (she leveled sexism
charges against the umpire); Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska is
seriously considering leaving the Republican Party as he bemoans the gridlock
in the Senate and blasts the reality TV show atmosphere of the White House;
Obama was in Anaheim blasting Trump and trying to take credit for the economic
recovery (quite a departure from precedence as ex presidents in the past rarely
take the partisanship low road to attack their successor but Obama is in a snit
fit that his legacy has been almost completely dismantled); Burgerville, a
small hamburger chain in the Pacific Northwest, has changed its policy and now
prohibits employees from wearing buttons that express political sentiments like
“Abolish ICE” and “No one is illegal”; on the sexual harassment front, 6 more
women have come forward alleging CBS President Les Moonves made unwanted sexual
advances to them (watch for this culprit of the reptilian brain culture to be
departing in the near future); on the hurricane front, Tropical Storm Florence
heading to the southeastern coast of the U.S. is expected to intensify to a Cat
3 or higher hurricane with likely flooding due to heavy rain fall and storm
surges; in Chicago, Emanuel’s announcement that he will not seek reelection has
not curbed the gun violence as through September 8, 2018, 2125 people mostly of
color have been shot by mostly people of color, of whom 344 have died (when
will Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism
as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of mostly
people of color by mostly people of color).
As always,
I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Diana
Ross, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that you speak
up as opposed mussitating, and a relevant quote from Marjorie Pay Hinckley on
abstention to avoid Fetal Alcohol Disorder Syndrome, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any
memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings,
or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a
unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the
recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. California Admission Day—celebrated in California to
commemorate the admission of California as the 31st state in 1850.
2. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Day—first observed in 1999 to create awareness of the fact that
pregnant ladies should abstain from consuming alcohol during their pregnancy.
3. 1980 Number One Song— the number one song in 1980 on
a run of 4 weeks in that position was “Upside Down” by Diana Ross. Here
is a recording of the song:

4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “mussitate”
which means to mutter when our dissatisfaction with the gridlock should cause
us to shout out our unhappiness.
5. Sitting on a Dock in the Bay--celebrating
the birth on this day in 1941 of Otis Redding who along with his band members
was killed in a plane crash 4 days after the song was recorded, enroute to
becoming number 1 on the charts in 1968.
On this
day in:
a. 1956
Elvis Presley appeared on The Ed Sullivan
Show for the first time.
b. 1965
Hurricane Betsy made its second landfall near New Orleans causing 76 fatalities
and $1.42 billion in damages, the first hurricane hitting the U.S. to exceed $1
billion in property damage.
c. 1971
the 4 day Attica Prison riot began and when it ended 39 people had been killed
when state troopers took over the facility.
d. 1993
in a what took you so long moment the Palestine Liberation Organization
recognized Israel as a legitimate state.
e. 2015
Elizabeth II became the longest reigning monarch in the history of the United
Kingdom and is still going strong.
Reflections on how to avoid Fetal Alcohol Disorder
Syndrome :” Complete abstention may be much easier
than moderation.” ― Marjorie Pay Hinckley, Small and Simple Things
