September 13, 2018 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Day of the Programmer

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For September 13, 2018 Hurricane Florence has weakened to a Cat 2 which is great news but the bad news is that it still is expected to bring catastrophic flooding and storm surge to the Carolinas now largely evacuated; Hurricane Florence has not even made its late Thursday or early Friday landfall and already Trump is being excoriated in the MSM from the ludicrous Op-Ed by the Washington Post that he is complicit in Florence to the false claim that FEMA has transferred $10 million to ICE a claim vehemently denied by ICE to a revival of charges that he was not empathetic to the plight of Puerto Ricans because they are not white; Susan Sarandon and Debra Messing are in a snit fit brawl over Variety’s article on Sarandon than more women than ever are running for office under Trump while Messing remains in the rut of Trump bashing; natural disasters like  Hurricane Florence bring out the best in America like the Confederate Navy who performed so well in Houston announced they were bringing 1,000 boats to the flood zones and the worst as fake government workers in safety vests were trying to get residents to leave in Virginia probably so they could loot their abandoned property; Kavanaugh has produced 260 pages of answers to over 1200 questions submitted primarily by Blue Senators (some of the questions were clutching straws like questioning why he incurred so much credit card debt buying sports tickets-answer was innocuous be bought them on behalf of himself and a group of friends then held a sports lottery to see who would win the tickets and the obligation to reimburse him); on the Good Samaritan front Blaine Hodge stepped in front machete wielding David Rivas to prevent him from killing a woman who had just rushed into a Bakersfield Starbucks and who survived but is in critical condition while Hodge suffered 200 stitches; the sounds of silence still plague the left over political violence following Farzad Fazeli knife attack on Red Congressional candidate Porter (so typical of Pelosi not to proclaim outrage when Republicans or conservatives are violently attacked); Twitter is in the hot seat again and becoming the poster child for freedom of internet access legislation for its banning of the phrase “illegal aliens” (as much as I would not like the government to police internet access I am more fearful of social media giants with their leftist bias determining who and who should not get access and the content on that access); Kamala Harris is probably basking in the glow of the 4 Pinocchios awarded to her for using Kavanaugh’s quote out of context which shows how much the end justifies the means mantra has infected the left wing of the Democratic Party; in Chicago, Emanuel’s announcement that he will not seek reelection has not curbed the gun violence as through September 11, 2018, 2156 people mostly of color have been shot by mostly people of color, of whom 347 have died as no one shot on the 11th died (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of mostly people of color by mostly people of color).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Tina Turner, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that you are not a thoughtless myrmidon, and a relevant quote from James Meredith on applying to the University of Mississippi, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Day of the Programmer—created in Russia in 2009 to honor the efforts and accomplishments of programmers; the day was chosen as the day is the 256th day of the year (28) as it represents the number of distinct values that can be represented by an 8 bit byte.
2. Bald Is Beautiful Day—created to celebrate those who are bald because of genetics, medical procedures like chemotherapy or voluntarily choose to be.
3. 1984 Number One Song— the number one song in 1984 on a run of 3 weeks in that position was “What’s Love Got to Do With It” by Tina Turner still going strong at 78. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGpFcHTxjZs
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “myrmidon” which means a follower, hireling or mercenary which too often defines those who are blind to reality but are myrmidons of socialists like Cortez-Ocasio, the latest darling of the extreme left.
5. Song Writing Is Great Therapy--celebrating the birth on this day in 1977 of noted singer and songwriter Fiona Apple who was raped as a pre teen and turned to songwriting to ease the trauma.
 On this day in:
a. 1814 in the turning battle of the War of 1812 the British fail in their attempt to capture Baltimore after burning Washington, D.C. while Francis Scott Key pens his poem “Defense of Fort McHenry” which became our National Anthem on March 3, 1931.
b. 1948 Margaret Chase Smith became the first woman to be elected to the House of Representatives and the Senate.
c. 1962 a federal District Court issued an injunction requiring the University of Mississippi to admit James Meredith as its first African-American student; it took several weeks of additional court moves and the intervention of 500 federal marshals to force the university to admit Meredith which it did on October 1, 1962 after enduring the nationalization of the Mississippi National Guard and rioting on campus.
d. 2001 civilian aircraft travel was reinstated after being shut down on September 11, 2001.
e. 2007 the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the UN General Assembly.
Reflections on integrating the University of Mississippi: “Nobody handpicked me...I believed, and believe now, that I have a Divine Responsibility... I am familiar with the probable difficulties involved in such a move as I am undertaking and I am fully prepared to pursue it all the way to a degree from the University of Mississippi.” James Meredith from his application to be admitted.
