September 9, 2017 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For September 9, 2017 It is almost showtime for Florida as Irma leaves Cuba some 90 miles away and heads to Florida now reduced to a Cat 3 but expected to upgrade to at least a Cat 4 as it is over water again; millions of Floridians are under mandatory evacuations as the track continues to shift to the east away from Miami in the direction of Tampa; Obama supporters’ attempts to absolve him from his disastrous policy on Syria have suffered a setback when the Holocaust Museum after intense pressure from Jewish groups has pulled a study which absolved our feckless ex-president; 84 year old Diane Fienstein who has recently been in the news for attacking Amy Barrett’s nomination to the 7th Circuit because she is a Catholic and defending the tradition in the Senate that if both senators from the nominee’s home state do not submit a favorable opinion, the nominee is supposed to be rejected may be facing a primary challenger from the increasingly leftist part of the party if she decides to run again in 2018; Norway goes to the polls on Monday amid rising concerns over its ties with the EU, immigration from the Middle East and asylum seekers; Trump and Pence praised for their response to Harvey are meeting with the Cabinet at Camp David to monitor Irma and the federal and state response as well as going over the legislative agenda including tax cuts and reform which must get passed or the Reds will wave goodbye to the House and Senate, the two leaders of which due to their obstruction should be replaced; on the let the good times roll front, U.S. booze exports are up over 10%; on the hurricane good news front Jose now a Cat 4 is veering to the right away from the Caribbean and the U.S. heading north toward Bermuda; through September 8, 2017 in Chicago the number of people being shot climbed to 2623, and the death toll again on the rise to 450.
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Tony Bennett, factoids of interest for this day in history, a relevant quote on fetal alcohol syndrome by Doctor Mark Mengel, hoping sooner than later the ship of state will have a functional jurymast to replace the dysfunctional one we have today,  secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Day—promoting awareness of the problems a fetus is exposed to if the mother drinks during pregnancy since the fetus drinks what the mother drinks; drinking in moderation is playing Russian Roulette with the baby’s well being.
2. International Sudoku  Daycreated by the World Puzzle Federation to promote the challenging game of Sudoku which started to appear in French newspapers in the late 19th Century and is now one of the most popular puzzles since you do not need to be language proficient to be able to play as it involves only numbers.
3. 1951 Number One Song— the number one song in 1951 on a run of 8 weeks in that position was “Because of You” by Tony Bennett. Here is a performance of the song:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-4zvArJDGg He is still performing at 91 but just had his concert in Sarasota cancelled due to Hurricane Irma but will return in 2018.
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “jurymast” which means a mast installed on a ship to replace one that has been lost (for our ship of state becalmed by gridlock we need a jurymast of bipartisanship to replace the mast of bipartisanship long since blown away).
5.  Hitting Bottom—celebrating the birth on this day in 1930 of Frank Lucas a one time notorious drug dealer who made millions in selling heroin and cocaine in NYC obtained directly from Southeast Asia thanks to corrupt members of the U.S. Army and the NYPD but after his third prison stint left the drug business to return to Harlem to try to repair the damage caused by his drug sales especially the deadly “Blue Magic” heroin and is still alive today at 87. His life was portrayed in the movie Ameerican Gangster starring Denzel Washington.
On this day in:
a. 1850 California was admitted as the 31st state.
b. 1940 George Stibitz of Bell Labs performed the first remote operation of a computer.
c. 1948 Kim Il-sung established the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea which was not democratic or a republic and which is ruled by his grandson,  a lunatic dictator Kim Jong Un who in honor of the anniversary may fire another ICBM.
d. 1971 the Attica Prison Riot commenced; when it ended 4 days later with the reoccupation of the prison by New York Correctional Department officers, 33 inmates and 10 correctional officers lay dead.
e. 1993 in a what took you so long moment, the Palestinian Liberation Organization officially recognized Israel as a legitimate state.
Reflections on why drinking during pregnancy is not worth the risk: “Children over the age of 12 who have fetal alcohol syndrome develop an array of devastating problems. These include mental health problems, disruptive school experiences, trouble with the law, inappropriate sexual behavior and drug and alcohol addiction.” Doctor Mark Mengel Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and follow me) and follow my blogs.
