May 7, 2016 Ridley's Believe It or Not National Bladder Cancer Awareness Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For May 7, 2016 Unfortunately still 258 days to go in President Obama’s   pathetic lame duck term; political theater took a break as the nation turned to the running of the 142nd running of the classic Kentucky Derby. As always, I hope your Saturday is off to a great start with Mothers’ Day brunch plans set and that  you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Janet Jackson, factoids of interest, a  relevant quote from an Hunter Thompson, while looking forward to enjoying a serving of roast leg of lamb (recipe included below), blessed with a positive attitude and  secure in  the knowledge that, if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or  anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem  at a great price  tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Dien Bien Phu Day—celebrating in Vietnam but not in France the decisive victory over France by the Viet Minh on May 7, 1954 at Dien Bien Phu in what was then North Vietnam after a battle lasting almost two months.
2. National Bladder Cancer Awareness Day—creating awareness of and seeking to raise funds for a cancer that strikes 70,000 Americans each year and causes 14,000 deaths. It is the fifth most common cancer, one of the most expensive to treat but ranks 23rd in terms of federal dollars allocated to it.
3. 1993 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1993  on a long run of eight weeks in that position That’s The Way Love Goes by Janet Jackson. Here’s a link to Janet Jackson performing That’s The Way Love Goes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikx4cC6JUGA
4. National  Roast Leg of Lamb Day—celebrating a really dramatic way to serve roast leg of lamb complete with recipe. http://www.thenibble.com/reviews/main/meats/lamb/spring-lamb-recipes4.asp
5. High Nooncelebrating the birthday on this day in 1901 of that noted actor Gary Cooper star of such classics as High Noon, The Pride of the Yankees and For Whom the Bell Tolls. Unfortunately his career was cut short at the age of 60 by prostate cancer.
On this day in:
a. 1846 the Cambridge Chronicle, the nation’s oldest surviving weekly was published for the first time in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
b. 1945 German General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Reims, France which was to take effect the next day bringing an end to World War II in Europe.

c. 1952 the concept of the integrated circuit, the foundation for all computers, was first published by Geoffrey Dummer.

d. 1992 in a better late than never moment, Michigan became the 38 th state to ratify the 27th Amendment barring midterm increases in salaries for members of Congress and the 27th Amendment became law.

e. 2004 in a chilling glimpse into the fanatic world of radical Islam, American businessman Nick Berg was beheaded by radical Islamic militants on video tape which was then released on the internet.

Reflections on the Kentucky Derby which will run for the 142nd time today The best thing about the Kentucky Derby is that it is only two minutes long. It is the quickest event in sports, except for Sumo-wrestling & Mike Tyson fights. Maybe Drag-racing is quicker, but I have never been attracted to it.” Hunter S. Thompson, noted American author of such counter culture books as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
