May 6, 2016 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Military Spouse Appreciation

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For May 6, 2016 Unfortunately still 259 days to go in President Obama’s   pathetic lame duck term; political theater in high gear as HRC is supposedly targeting Jeb Bush donors, HRC’s top aide has been interviewed by the FBI, Chris Mathews is caught on camera ogling Melanie Trump and Ryan and Trump will be meeting to discuss unifying the fractured Republican Party. As always, I hope your Friday is off to a great start and that  you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Kriss Kross, factoids of interest, a  relevant quote from an anonymous source, while looking forward to enjoying a some crepes Suzette, blessed with a positive attitude and  secure in  the knowledge that, if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or  anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem  at a great price  tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Military Spouse Appreciation Day—observing since 1984 on the Friday before Mothers’ Day that in military families there are two men and women who have to endure the hardships of serving their country, the spouse who is in uniform either here or in duty overseas on land or on sea and the spouse left at home to care for the children, manage the family affairs and worry over the safety of the other spouse in uniform. Sadly, due to the shrinking military and greater challenges to this country, the deployments are getting more frequent and they are getting longer, putting even more challenges on marriages.
2. National Nurses Appreciation Day—celebrating and honoring the accomplishments of the nurses who are the backbone of our medical care delivery system and who protect us patients from the arrogance and lack of bedside manner that doctors burdened by high med school debt and shrinking insurance reimbursement and increasing federal and state mandated paperwork too often display.
3. 1992 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1992 (but providing another reason to soon head backwards to the time of rock and roll) on a long run of eight weeks in that position Jump by Kriss Kross. Here’s a link to Kriss Kross performing Jump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=010KyIQjkTk
4. National  Crêpes Suzzette Day—celebrating a really dramatic way to end a meal at a restaurant at table side when the crêpes have Grand Marinier poured over them and then ignited.  In 1895, Henri Carpentier, Mâitre d’Hotel at the Café de Paris in Monte-Carlo, first prepared the dish when he prepared a special recipe at tableside for the future King Edward VII, son of Queen Victoria, then the Prince of Wales. Carpentier flambéed crêpes in an sauce consisting of orange juice, grated orange peel and orange liqueur. The Prince named them after his lady friend, Suzette (we wonder if wife, Princess-then-Queen Alexandra, was thrilled enough to eat them). When taking your mother or your children’s mother out for Mothers’ Day brunch, a great desert to order.
5. Dream On and Find the Ego—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1886 of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis and a user and proponent of cocaine in treatment who introduced us to the ego and super ego and pioneer in the meaning and importance of dreams in analysis.
On this day in:
a. 1877 Chief Crazy Horse of the Olgala Sioux surrendered to the U.S. Army in Nebraska.
b. 1882 the U.S. Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act which barred Chinese skilled or unskilled in mining from entering the United States. Not a good day for the U.S. that had welcomed the Chinese to work and die in building the Transcontinental Railroad but not work in the mines to compete with Americans.
c. 1937 thirty-six people are killed when the zeppelin Hindenburg kept aloft by hydrogen gas which is extremely flammable burst into flames while trying to land in Lakehurst, New Jersey, spelling an end to zeppelin passenger air travel.
d. 1994 former Arkansas state worker Paula Jones, in a portent of what we might again face if Bill Clinton becomes the First Man, sued President Clinton for sexually abusing her.
e. 2001 in a trip to Syria, Pope John Paul II became the first Pope to enter a mosque.
Reflections on the sacrifices of military spouses: “Don’t judge that I’m one of the few girls strong enough to live this life. Don’t judge because I’m one of the few girls willing to make sacrifices to love a man half-way around the world. Respect me for giving love and support to a man fighting for our freedom.” Anon
