May 1, 2016 Ridley's Believe It Or Not International Labor Day/ Law Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For May 1, 2016 Unfortunately still 264 days to go in President Obama’s   pathetic lame duck term; political theater in high gear at the Arizona Republican Convention where Cruz was slaughtered in the primary yet because of “glitches” he picked up more delegates than Trump; ICE has given Trump the Horton  trump card with news of release as opposed  to deporting almost 20,000 convicted criminals including some 2,000 murderers, rapists, robbers and other violent crime perpetrators:http://alaskanpoet.blogspot.com/2016/04/more-walls-to-build-one-to-destroy.html; after seeing Obama perform at his last Press Club Dinner, it is clear that he has a career that many of us wished he had followed rather than politics—a stand up comedian; Indiana votes on Tuesday and if he loses, Cruz should be toast and the Reds can begin the almost impossible task of unifying the party made easier by not having expend energy to move Boehner’s dead body out of the way. Leaving the political theater, as always, I hope your Sunday is off to a great start and that  you enjoy today’s holidays and observances,  music links to Terrence Trent D’Arby and Joan Collins, factoids of interest, a  relevant quote from Aristotle,  while looking forward to enjoying a chocolate parfait, blessed with a positive attitude and  secure in  the knowledge that, if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or  anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem  at a great price  tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. International Labor Day/Law Day—promoting greater benefits for labor and the working class and celebrated by labor unions, communists, socialists, and anarchists around the world, even in the U.S. but a least here with the counterbalance of the rule of law which during this administration through executive orders has taken quite a few body blows.
2. Lei Day—celebrating in Hawaii since 1929; if you want to slow down and smell the flowers all day long on May 1 be in Hawaii and don a lei and enjoy the festivities.
3. 1988 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1988 on a brief run of one week in that position Wishing Well by Terrence Trent D’Arby. Here is a link to Terrence Trent D’Arby performing Wishing Well:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynIHsHYaig0
4. National Chocolate Parfait Day—celebrating that multilayered desert that one would find hard not to finish bring truth to the translation of parfait, which is perfect. Here is a recipe that looks easy to follow: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/chocolate-parfaitshttp://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/chocolate-parfaits
5. Both Sides Nowcelebrating the birthday on this day in 1939 not of a football play able to play offense and defense but that iconic singer Judy Collins whose rendition of Both Sides Now is a classic.  Here is a link to Both Sides Now:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chB7E2cVOYE
On this day in:
a. 1759 to the joy of wives of the future and the bane of their frugal husbands, Josiah Wedgwood established the Wedgwood Pottery Company in Great Britain.
b. 1840, the Penny Black, the world’s first adhesive postage stamp was introduced in Great Britain thereby ending the practice of having  the recipient pay for postage on delivery.

c. 1869 the Folies Bergère opened in Paris.                                                              d. 1927 the first cooked meals on a scheduled flight are served aboard an Imperial Airways flight from London to Paris.

e. 2003 on board an aircraft carrier President Bush indicated that major combat activities in Iraq were over; unfortunately after that optimistic pronouncement 4,493 military personnel were killed and thousands more wounded in a war we never should have fought over an erroneous assumption that Saddam Hussein  had MWD—so much for nation building that HRC voted for, Sanders did not and Trump advised against.
Reflections on labor during International Labor Day: “The end of labor is to gain leisure.” Aristotle Sadly too many Americans under this administration are forced into leisure because they cannot find work and have dropped out of the labor force.
