Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For May 3, 2016 Unfortunately still 262 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term; political theater in high gear as Cruz frantically campaigning in Indiana to stave off certain defeat but showing some class in confronting Trump supporters; new poll in Ohio, the only state its current governor has won, shows that 49 percent of the Red voters want him to drop out of the race; the faces of “tolerance” were displayed by young Hispanics waiving Mexican flags and screaming the F word at Trump supporters; HRC confronted by a laid off victim of Obama’s and HRC’s war on coal in West Virginia and in a moment that must have female White House interns shaking in fear, HRC announced that Bill would be her Tsar on job creation. Leaving political theater, sad news that a Navy Seal was killed in Iraq near Irbil, south of Mosul that the Iraqis have yet to recapture. As always, I hope your Tuesday is off to a great start and that you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Sinead, factoids of interest, a relevant quote from Christopher Dodd, while looking forward to enjoying a raspberry tart (recipe included below), blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that, if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Sun Day—created by presidential proclamation by President Jimmy Carter in 1978 to promoting solar energy; noble goal but with the crony capitalists like Solyndra that are drawn to Obama like ants at a picnic table with uncovered food, the taxpayers get really burned.
2. World Press Freedom Day—celebrating absolute need of a press free from interference from government to expose corruption, fraud and abuse; in the U.S. the biggest assault to a free press in addition to the lack of transparency in government (thank God for FOIA!) is the self censorship of the press due to the vast majority of journalism professors, editors and reporters being very leftist in their views.
3. 1990 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1990 on a run of four weeks in that position Nothing Compares to U by Sinead O’Connor. Here’s a link to Sinead O’Connor performing Nothing Compares to U: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2cdyy_sinead-o-connor-nothing-compares-2_music
4. National Raspberry Tart Day—celebrating a really great way to enjoy raspberries; for those not endowed with great cooking skills, here is a link to an easy recipe for baking a raspberry tart—bon appétit!
5. Wait There’s More—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1935 of Ron Popeil, noted inventor and pitchman of food preparation products like the Chop-o-Matic and for 50 years the king of TV infomercials.
On this day in:
a. 1802 Washington, D.C. was incorporated as a city.
b. 1915 Canadian Lt. Colonel John McCrae wrote what would become the iconic poem of World War I In Flanders Field; unfortunately McCrae did not survive the war, dying on January 28, 1918 of pneumonia.
c. 1921 West Virginia became the first state to enact a broad sales tax but did immediately enforce the collection of taxes for several years due to enforcement and collection issues.
d. 1948 SCOTUS in the case of Shelley v. Kraemer ruled that covenants prohibiting the sale of real estate to African Americans and other minorities were unconstitutional. e. 2015 at Garland, Texas, Elton Simpson, an American born citizen and a convert to Islam, and Nadir Soofi, an American born citizen, raised as a Muslim due to his Pakistani father and who spent 6 years there from 11-17, attempted to attack an exhibition of cartoons of the Prophet in response to the Charlie Hebno shootings, but were foiled by police who sent both to Paradise. Another chilling reminder of the dangers we face from radical Islam when we appear to be clueless on how our citizens are be radicalized which means other than killing them after they start shooting in our PC Islamaphobia culture fostered by Obama, Clinton and the left, we will remain defenseless on how to stop the spread of radical Islam within our own borders.
Reflections on freedom of the press: “When the public's right to know is threatened, and when the rights of free speech and free press are at risk, all of the other liberties we hold dear are endangered.” Christopher Dodd, former senator from Connecticut and along former Congressman Barney Franks the author of one of the major headaches facing banks and businesses seeking funds to expand. Ironic that a school noted for its journalism, the University of Missouri is in the forefront of silencing the press as we witnessed with now fired Associate Professor Melissa Click calling for muscle to force a student paper journalist from a rally on campus.
