Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For May 15, 2016 Unfortunately still 250 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term. Very exciting political theater for once not here as Venezuela appears to be on the verge of economic meltdown while rumors of coups circulate against leftist President Maduro (take note Sanders of what socialism brings); Newt Gingrich’s name is being circulated as a potential Trump running mate; more speculation that the Republican Party is still getting closer to self destruction as more and more talk of a third party continues to surface which would guarantee the election to Sanders or Clinton. As always, I hope your Sunday is proving to be a great one and that you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link as we have fled rap to Nat King Cole, factoids of interest, a relevant poem from Police Lt, Dan Marcou, while looking forward to enjoying a few chocolate chip cookies, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that, if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. International Day of the Families—another UN observance since 1993 promoting awareness of the economic, social and cultural issues facing families as the basic building block of our society.
2. Police Officers Memorial Day—honoring since 1962 the memory of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in trying to protect this nation. If you see a police officer today might not be a bad idea to thank them for their service.
3. 1948 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1948 on a long run of seven weeks in that position Nature Boy by Nat King Cole. Here’s a link to Nat King Cole performing Nature Boy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq0XJCJ1Srw
4. National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day—celebrating the perennial all time cookie favorite.
5. How To Really Botch a Rollout Day—bemoaning the birthday of Kathleen Sebelius, a career politician who had the misfortune to be appointed to head the Department of Human Health Services and oversee the roll out of the Affordable Care Act which was an unmitigated costly disaster costing almost a billion dollars to create a flawed enrollment website proving once again the ineptness of the federal government and its inability to control waste.
On this day in:
a. 1718 James Puckle, an English inventor and writer, received a patent for his “Defense Gun” capable of firing 9 shots a minute; unfortunately for Puckle the machine was never a commercial success.
b. 1783 Diego Marin Aquilera flew a glider for a distance of almost 400 meters at a height of 5-6 meters off the ground in one of the first demonstration of manned flight.
c. 1862 President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill creating the Federal Bureau of Agriculture, later to be renamed the Department of Agriculture, proving that even the most deadly war we have ever participated in cannot deter the growth of the bureaucracies in the federal government.
d. 1911 SCOTUS in Standard Oil of New Jersey v. U.S. ruled that Standard Oil was a monopoly under the Sherman Antitrust Act and ordered the company to be broken up.
e. 2013 in a surge of three days of violence in Iraq over 389 civilians were killed by IEDs and suicide bombings.
Reflections on police killed in the line of duty: They always knew they could be
They never thought they would be
God knows none ever should be
Killed in the line of duty
They never thought they would be
God knows none ever should be
Killed in the line of duty
Some made their final stand
Their profession’s last demand
They fell with gun in hand Killed in the line of duty
Their profession’s last demand
They fell with gun in hand Killed in the line of duty
A routine to many a cop
Some made one final stop
Someone’s Mom or Pop
Killed in the line of duty
Some made one final stop
Someone’s Mom or Pop
Killed in the line of duty
Others answered one last call
To a robbery, theft, or brawl
They arrived only to fall Killed in the line of duty
To a robbery, theft, or brawl
They arrived only to fall Killed in the line of duty
Some were dressed in brown, some blue
Some in gray, and plain clothes too
Some were dressed like me and you
Some in gray, and plain clothes too
Some were dressed like me and you
Killed in the line of duty
May their souls be forever blessed
For they who are now at rest
Died doing what they loved best
Killed in the line of duty
Forgotten they never could be
Forgotten they never should be
Thought they never would be
Killed in the line of duty
Forgotten they never should be
Thought they never would be
Killed in the line of duty
God bless all those who fell
They are missed and loved so well
Let us pray and toll the bell
Those killed in the line of duty
They are missed and loved so well
Let us pray and toll the bell
Those killed in the line of duty
