May 5, 2016 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Cinco de Mayo

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For May 5, 2016 Unfortunately still 260 days to go in President Obama’s   pathetic lame duck term; political theater in high gear as Trump the presumptive nominee starts his pivot toward general election as the last two Republican Presidents announce they will not support him; a Rumanian hacker extradited to the U.S. is admitting to have easily hacked into HRC’s private email server meaning that exposure of national security classified material no longer a theoretical possibility but a fact; Sanders is vowing to go to bitter end; London faces the real possibility of electing a Muslim mayor with suspect ties to ISIS. As always, I hope your Cinco de Mayo is off to a great start and that  you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Roxette, factoids of interest, a  relevant quote from John Ridley, while looking forward to enjoying a your favorite hoagie, blessed with a positive attitude and  secure in  the knowledge that, if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or  anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem  at a great price  tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Cinco de Mayo—celebrating the defeat by Mexico of the French at the Battle of Puebla on this day in 1862; the victory by the Mexicans forced the French to abandon their march on Mexico City, regroup, bring in reinforcements from France to fight again a year later, this time victorious and march on to occupy Mexico City and force President Juarez to flee. The holiday now rivals St. Patrick’s Day in terms of alcohol consumption so be alert while driving.
2. International Day of the Midwife—celebrating since 1991 the contributions of midwives to prenatal and post natal care of the mother both in developing countries and developed like Sweden and the Netherlands.
3. 1991 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1991 on a brief run of one week in that position Joyride by Roxette. Here’s a link to Roxette performing Joyride: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCorJG9mubk
4. National Hoagie Day—celebrating a really great sandwich that originated in Philadelphia and also goes by the name hero or sub. !
5. A Manifesto That Should Never Have Been Printedcelebrating or bemoaning depending on one’s point of view the birthday on this day in 1818 of Karl Marx, the author of the Communist Manifesto, whose ideas along with Friedrich Engels formed the philosophical and economic basis for the establishment of communism in Russia and the overthrow of the Tsar and whose writings are on the top ten for Bernie Sanders.
On this day in:
a. 1809 Mary Kies became the first woman to be issued a U.S. Patent for her technique of weaving straw with silk and thread to create bonnets.
b. 1891 the Music Hall of New York City (later renamed Carnegie Hall) held its first concert with the great Russian composer Tchaikovsky performing as a guest conductor.

c. 1934 the first Three Stooges movie, Women Haters, was released.                                  d. 1965 at Menlo Park, California, the Warlocks, later known as the Grateful Dead, made their first public appearance.

e. 1994 American teenager Michael P. Fay was caned in Singapore for theft and vandalism in a hotel.

Reflections on Cinco de Mayo: “For children, diversity needs to be real and not merely relegated to learning the names of the usual suspects during Black History Month or enjoying south-of-the-border cuisine on Cinco de Mayo. It means talking to and spending time with kids not like them so that they may discover those kids are in fact just like them.” John Ridley, noted American author but not related to the Alaskanpoet. One of the greatest challenges we face in the PC world of diversity is how do we assimilate the millions of illegal aliens and inculcate in them a sense of pride in their heritage but a sense that they are Americans first, English speaking first, with a knowledge of and pride in our history and culture.
