August 9 History Book Lovers Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—August 9, 2015 Trust your Sunday is proving to be a great one and as always, I hope you enjoy Sunday’s meager holidays and observances,  factoids of interest, a music video by the Elton John and Kiki Dare, a relevant quote from Jesse Owens, looking forward to enjoying some rice pudding, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
       1. National Peacekeepers Day (Canada)—observed in Canada to commemorate Canadian forces that have served as UN Peacekeepers around the world.
       2. Book Lovers Day—a great way to enjoy a Sunday, curled up in the shade reading a favorite book.
       3. 1976 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1976 on a four week run in that position Don’t Go Breaking My Heart by the Elton John and Kiki Dare.  Here is a link to Elton John and Kiki Dare performing Don’t Go Breaking My Heart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQmRgFzg0jI
      4. National Rice Pudding Day—celebrating another tasty way to end a meal.
      5. Drawl Takes All—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1944 of Sam Elliot the  iconic actor with a great voice and stoic physique.
On this day in:
       a. 1173 construction of the campanile of the Cathedral of Pisa began; now known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa the construction took 200 years to complete although not sure whether the length of time in construction contributed to the lean.
       b. 1854 Henry David Thoreau published Walden.
       c. 1936 in a great debunking of the myth of the Nazis as Aryan Supermen, Jesse Owens won his fourth Gold Medal at the Berlin Summer Olympics; needless to say Adolf Hitler was not a happy camper.
       d. 1945 a B-29 named Bockscar dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, three days after Hiroshima had been destroyed by an atomic bomb.
       e. 2014 Michael Brown, an unarmed black was shot and killed by Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson who unfortunately was not wearing a body camera which would have revealed Brown was charging him and did not have his hands up in a don’t shoot sign and would have most likely prevented the riots, looting and property damaged that followed when officer Wilson was not charged by the grand jury.
Reflections on turning dreams into reality: “We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” Jesse Owens
