       1. World Mosquito Day—honoring not those pesky and deadly insects but rather the discovery by Indian physician Ronald Ross that female mosquitoes are the vector to transmit malaria, a disease that has killed millions and continues to kill hundreds of thousands mostly in third world countries.
2Virtual World Day—celebrating virtual worlds that enable thousands to play a variety of games and contests in a virtual world.
       3. 1956 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1956 on a long run of eleven weeks in that position Don’t Be Cruel/Hound Dog by Elvis Presley.  Here is a link to the King performing the iconic Don’t Be Cruel/Hound Dog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViMF510wqWA
      4. National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day—celebrating a really tasty desert but unfortunately highly caloric especially if topped with whipped cream or served ala mode.
      5. Planting Notes Day—celebrating not notes on how to excel at having a green thumb but rather the birthday on this day in 1948 of Robert Plant, the lead singer for another iconic rock band, Led Zeppelin.
On this day in:
      a. 1882 Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture debuted in Moscow.
      b. 1910 the Great Fire started in Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Western Montana; before it was finally extinguished more than 3,000,000 acres were burned, a number which has been paled by the 7,000,000 acres already in the West with numerous fires raging with no idea when they will be controlled even though 30,000 fire fighters are on the fire lines.
   c. 1965 in Hayneville, Alabama Keene, New Hampshire Episcopal seminarian Jonathan Daniels was killed by an unpaid sheriff’s deputy when he pushed black activist Ruby Sales out of the way of the shotgun.
      d. 1993 after rounds of secret negotiations in Norway between Israel and the PLO the Oslo Accords were signed.
     e. 1998 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Quebec could not secede from Canada without approval of the Canadian federal government.
Reflections on the symbolism of mosquitoes: Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room.” Christine Todd Whitman, 50th governor of New Jersey
