World Post Day--celebrating on this day in
1874 in Berne, Switzerland the formation of the Universal Postal Union which
marked the beginning of a global communications revolution wherein people
around the world obtained the ability to communicate by mail. Given the demise
of snail mail and the exponential rise of texting and email, this holiday may
be on the endangered holiday list.
2. Leif Erickson Day—honoring the contributions of Norwegians to the United States and the feats of Leif Erickson who was the first
European to discover North America beating Columbus by almost 500 years.
3. Fire
Prevention Day—commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which burned
for 27 hours and killed over 300 people which by legend started by Mrs. O’Leary
knocking a lantern over by accident in her barn.
4. Submarine-Hero-Hoagie-Grinder
Day—celebrating a great choice of sandwiches for the palate; not sure
where this came from but suspect Subway was involved.
On this day in
a. 1888 the Washington Monument was
opened to the public.

b. 1919 in the Black Sox Scandal the Cincinnati
Reds won the World Series against the Chicago White Sox but 8 players on that
team were charged with throwing the games in exchange for money from
gamblers, acquitted and then banned from baseball.
c. 1967 After being captured
the day before Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara was executed for attempting
to incite revolution in Bolivia.
d. 1986 the classic musical Phantom of the Opera had its first
performance at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London.
Even our national pastime can break a kid’s faith in heroes: As Jackson departed from the Grand Jury room, a small boy
clutched at his sleeve and tagged along after him. "Say it ain't
so, Joe," he pleaded. "Say it ain't so." "Yes
kid, I'm afraid it is," Jackson replied. "Well, I never would've thought
it," the boy said.
