October 13 History U. S. Navy birthday

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—October 13, 2014:  Trust your Weekend was a good one and that you are ramped up to start the work week and so refreshed that you enjoy the holidays, factoids and  quote from President Kennedy, with a smile on your sunscreened face, sharing a large bag of M&Ms with friends and family, blessed with a positive attitude, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem tailored to the event and the recipient.
      1. U.S. Navy Birthday—celebrating the formation of the Continental Navy on this day in 1775 and in partial preview to what happened after World War II and what is happening today after the end of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress sold all of its meager number of ships.
      2. International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction—designated by the U.N. in 2009 and if the Gores of the world are right a good idea to prepare for the climate change disasters like hurricanes and tornados that may await us and if wrong, preparation is always a great idea.
      3. laughter Is Not Obscene Day—honoring the birthday of Lenny Bruce on this day in 1925, a stand up comedian and counter culture critic who was continually being arrested for obscenity for his acts and has the distinction, although deceased, of being acquitted by Governor Pataki for the obscenity charges.
      4. Graduate Day—celebrating not those high school and college graduates with diplomas and no jobs but rather the birthday of Paul Simon born on this day in 1941 and whose songs were an integral part of the movie The Graduate with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft.
       5. National M&M Day—celebrating that great candy that melts in your mouth and not in your hands with or without peanuts; what else would you expect from a product that has great ads also.
On this day in
       a. 1958 Paddington Bear that classic bear in children’s literature made his debut.
       b. 1972 a Uruguayan Air Force  Flight 571 carrying 45 people including a rugby team crashed into the Andes between Argentina and Chile. Two rugby players, probably wing forwards (position played by the Alaskanpoet) walked for over 10 days to get out of the mountains and seek help.  16 survivors still on the mountain were rescued on December 23 and survived without food only by eating the dead that were preserved in the snow.
       c. 1976 the first electron micrograph of the Ebola virus, which is now devastating once again West Africa and caused its first fatality in the United States,  was obtained by Dr. F.A. Murphy of the CDC.  We need to accelerate the development of a vaccine or the now flat world is going to be in a major pickle.
       d. 1983 Ameritech Mobile Communications (now AT&T) launched the first cellular network in Chicago.
As we continue to shrink the size of our military and decrease the number of ships in service, the current administration ought to listen to the words of another Democrat President: “Events of October 1962 indicated, as they had all through history, that control of the sea means security. Control of the seas can mean peace. Control of the seas can mean victory. The United States must control the seas if it is to protect your security...." President John F. Kennedy, June 6, 1963, on board USS Kitty hawk
