October 19 History World Mental Health Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—October 10, 2014:  Trust your Friday is proving to be a great day and that you enjoy the holidays and factoids and a quote from Winston Churchill, with a smile on your sunscreened face, waiting for desert, blessed with a positive attitude, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem tailored to the event and the recipient. Go Cardinal against the Cougars today!
      1. World Day Against the Death Penalty—creating awareness since 2003 of the need to eliminate the death penalty which has occurred in 148 countries either by law or in practice.
      2. World Mental Health Day—celebrated since 1992 today in over 150 countries for education of, awareness of and advocacy for mental health—drive by a bus stop in most metropolitan areas in this country and you will see our mental health system has collapse with jails and prisons taking the place of treatment centers.
      3. National Disaster Reductions Day—recognizing that if we are in an era of global warming we could expect an increase in weather related storms which is another reason to appreciate this day—preparation for natural disaster turns us from a grasshopper with a violin to ants with fully stocked larders .
       4. National Angel Food Cake Day—Given the fact that most weddings occur in the spring, surprised this wedding staple eaten and pushed into the mouth of bride and groom is celebrated on this fall day.
On this day in
       a. 732 to the great relief of Western Europe Charles Martel of Tours at Poiter in France defeated a large army of Moors forcing their retreat back to Spain and ultimately back to Africa from whence they had come.
       b. 1938 in a chilling reminder of what happens when leaders have no backbones against tyrants, the Munich Agreement was signed ceding the Sudetenland to Germany enhancing Hitler’s beliefs that Britain and France would not act if he invaded Poland.
       c. 1957 President Eisenhower apologized to the finance minister of Ghana after he was denied service in a D.D. restaurant.
       d. 1973 Vice President Spiro resigned after charges of income tax evasion to be replaced by Gerald Ford who became President after Nixon resigned to escape conviction of impeachment
While Chamberlain saw the world the way he wanted it to be as opposed to how it is, Churchill did not (sound familiar today in D.C.?). “An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.”
Winston Churchill
