Believe It Or Not—August 7, 2014: Hope you enjoy the holidays
posted, along with the factoids and quote from President George W. Bush with a
smile on your face, a positive attitude and a dish of raspberries in cream.
1. Purple
Heart Day—honoring the Purple Heart created by George Washington originally
to commemorate meritorious service and awarded to only three soldiers during
the Revolutionary War-- Elijah Churchill,
William Brown and Daniel Bissell, Jr. and since 1931 awarded to anyone
wounded or killed in battle.
2. Professional
Speakers Day—celebrating those
professional speakers with awesome oratorical skills but sadly in the case of
some current speakers (not to be named here) the content of their ideas falls
far short at their delivery skills.
3. National
India Pale Ale Day---celebrating since
2011that medium to high hop ale with a higher alcohol content than most beers.
4. National Lighthouse Day-- celebrating since 1989 the passage of an Act by
Congress for the establishment of lighthouses and other devices to aid in
navigation and keep ships off of shoals and reefs. You have no idea what a thrill
it was to see prior to having radar to be in a fishing boat with rain coming down
so fast you could barely see but out in the distance a light from a lighthouse
telling you where you were in relation to the rocks and disaster.
5. National
Raspberries In Cream Day—celebrating one of great treats of all time and
but for the cream very good for you.
On this day
in
a. 1944 IBM introduced the first
program controlled calculator—the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator also
known as the Harvard Mark I.
b. 1964 Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution based on what were
probably phantom attacks by North Vietnamese PT Boats on the destroyers USS
Maddox and the USS C. Turner Joy authorizing the United States to go to war in
Vietnam—sad day in retrospect both for us and the people of North and South
Vietnam.

c. 1978 President Carter declared
a state of emergency at Love Canal due decades of improper disposal of toxic
waste.
Honor those who sacrifice in harm’s way for your safety
even if not a citizen at time of sacrifice: “One of the most
meaningful things that's happened to me since I've been the governor - the
president - governor - president. Oops. Ex-governor. I went to Bethesda Naval
Hospital to give a fellow a Purple Heart, and at the same moment I
watched him - get a Purple Heart for action in Iraq - and at that same
- right after I gave him the Purple Heart, he was sworn in as a
citizen of the United States - a Mexican citizen, now a United States
citizen.”
George W. Bush 43rd President of the United States—tough way
to become a citizen but an idea of what a magnet of opportunity this great country
is.
