Ridley's Believe It Or Not—August 27, 2014: Trust
your Wednesday is starting on a great note and that you enjoy the holidays of some
distinction along with the factoids and quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. with
a smile on your face, a positive
attitude and a large banana split in front of you before calling it quits for
the day secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable
event you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized
poem tailored to the event and the recipient.
, 1.
Lyndon Baines Johnson Day (Texas)—celebrating in Texas as a state
holiday the birthday of the 36th President of the United States and
architect of the Great Society and the War on Poverty, great goals but
decimated by the realities of the Vietnam War.
2. National Petroleum Day —celebrating the contribution of petroleum to our
way of life but also creating awareness of the need to increase the use of
renewables.
3. Banana Lovers Day—celebrating that great tasty
tropical fruit which is excellent in banana splits or frozen on a stick and
dipped in hot chocolate and nuts.
4. The Duchess Who Wasn’t Day –celebrating the birthday
of a very prolific author Margaret
Wolfe Hungerford over 40 book who
used the pen name the Duchess and was born on this day in 1850..
On this day in
a. 410 the sacking of Rome by the Visgoths ended after three days of carnage.
b. 1896 the Anglo-Zanzibar commenced at 9:00 a.m. and ended 45 minutes later,
the shortest war in world history.
c. 1928 11 years before the commencement of
World War II hostilities in Europe, 15 nations signed the Kellogg-Briand Pact
outlawing war; the original 15 were joined by 46 more nations.
Sadly we
could not fight a two front war—Vietnam and the War on Poverty and we ended
up losing both. “One of the greatest casualties
of the war in Vietnam is the Great Society—shot down on the battlefield of
Vietnam.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
