your Poet’s Day is super productive so you
can leave early and that you enjoy the holidays of some distinction along with
the factoids and quote from The River of Winged Dreams with a smile on
your face, a positive attitude and a large pecan torte in front of you before
calling it quits for the day but in great anticipation of the weekend secure in
the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event you know

Poet’s Day—celebrating not the most loved and valuable people on the
planet—poets like me—but rather in the UK and Australia celebrating the last
day of the work week each Friday in accordance with the day’s acronym: Piss Off
Early Tomorrow’s Saturday.
2. National Pecan Torte Day—celebrating one
of the great high caloric and tasty deserts.
3. National Tooth Fairy Day--celebrating a
tradition that goes back to Middle Ages—the tooth fairy leaving a gift usually
money under a child’s pillow where the child has lost a baby tooth. Maybe because
of inflation (the quarter per tooth I received in the early 50’s is now several
dollars) it is usually the last childhood belief to go.
4. National
Be An Angel Day—established by
Jane Howard Feldman in 1993 to promote random acts of kindness to your fellow
human beings, like buying the person behind you in the Starbucks coffee line
that person’s coffee order; great idea but probably would be better if it were
celebrated more than just one day a year.

a. 1849 Austria launched the first airstrikes in history against Venice using
pilotless balloons.
b. 1851 the first America’s Cup was won appropriately by a ship named America.
c. 1952 the French penal colony
Devil’s Island, located off the coast of French Guiana in South America was permanently
closed. The hell hole was memorialized
by Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman in the movie Papillion.
d. 1996 President Clinton signed
welfare reform, the cornerstone of the Republican’s Contract with America
into law.
What is remarkable about this day is how little effort or
expenditure it takes to be an angel with a random act of kindness: Un-winged and naked, sorrow surrenders its crown to a
throne called grace. Even when muddy your wings sparkle bright wonders that
