Ridley's Believe It Or Not—August 11, 2014: Trust
your weekend was a good one and that you enjoy the holidays of dubious
distinction, along with the factoids and one liners from Teddy Roosevelt, Bill
Clinton and George W. Bush with a smile on your face, a positive attitude and a
large portion of a raspberry bombe.
1. Ingersoll Day—celebrating the birthday of Robert
Green Ingersoll on this day in 1833; he was a noted essayist and orator and
known as the “Great Agnostic.”
2. Presidential Joke Day--celebrating not
the joke that our current President seems to be but rather Presidential humor
memorialized by Ronald Reagan on this day in 1984 joking said before a Saturday radio
broadcast not realizing the mike was live: “My fellow Americans. I'm pleased
to announce that I've signed legislation outlawing the Soviet Union. We begin
bombing in five minutes." Needless
to say the Soviets were not pleased but as Putin has proved again and again,
the Russians have no sense of humor.
3. National Apple A Day To Keep A Recession Away---celebrating
not the proverbial gift a student brings to class for a teacher but rather the
birthday of Steve Wozniak on this day in 1950, the co-founder of one of the
iconic technology companies of all time, Apple.
4. National Raspberry
Bombe Day--celebrating a true classic desert for the summer—raspberry sherbet,
ice cream, heavy cream, chopped nuts, candied fruit and even a spot of rum—enjoy!
On this day in
a. 1934 the first federal prisoners arrived at Alcatraz Island immortalized in
movies such as the Birdman of Alcatraz
with Burt Lancaster and Escape from
Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood and after it closed The Rock with Sean Connery. Now a can’t miss tourist attraction.
b. 1965 the Watts Riots began ultimately leaving after 6 days of violence 34
dead, hundreds injured and millions of dollars of property, sparked by a
traffic stop.
c. 1972 finally after 11 years of involvement the last U.S. combat troops were
withdrawn from South Vietnam.
Whether
Red or Blue at least our Presidents have a good sense of humor which today
given the bipartisanship in Washington is needed more than ever: "When they call the roll in the
Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer 'present' or 'not
guilty.'" —President Teddy Roosevelt
"Being president is like running a cemetery: you've got a lot of people under you and nobody's listening." —President Bill Clinton "These stories about my intellectual capacity really get under my skin. You know, for a while I even thought my staff believed it. There on my schedule first thing every morning it said, 'Intelligence Briefing.'" —President George W. Bush
