August 21 History Senior Citizen's Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—August 21, 2014Trust your Thursday is proving to be a good one and that you enjoy the holidays of some distinction along with the factoids and quote from The Richmond Enquirer with a smile on your face, a positive attitude and a large bowl of Spumoni before calling it quits for the day but in great anticipation of POET’s Day on this Friday.
,          1. National Senior Citizen’s Day—established by Presidential Proclamation on August 19, 1988 by Ronald Reagan to honor the accomplishments of Senior Citizens of which I am one.
           2. National Spumoni Day—celebrating one of the great Italian deserts for the summer.
           3. National Geico/Poker Day--celebrating the birthday on this day 76 years ago of Kenny Rogers, one of the great country/singers of all time and now appearing in a hilarious Geico commercial.
           4. C Day—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1936 of one of the great basketball players of all time, Wilt Chamberlain, the only pro to score 100 points in a game even though he struggled with free throws on this day.
On this day in
             a. 1831 Nat Turner an African American slave in Virginia led a revolt of slaves and free blacks that resulted in the deaths of 55 whites and over 200 blacks which resulted in his conviction and hanging on November 11, 1831--definitely one of the South's worst nightmares and why they went ballistic when African-Americans starting appearing in the Union Army.
             b. 1888 the first successful adding machine was patented by William Seward Burroughs.
             c. 1959 in a great Aloha moment, President Eisenhower by proclamation admitted Hawaii as our 50th State.
             d. 1960 Motown Records released Please Mr. Postman by the Marvelettes which would become its first of many number one hits.
What is remarkable about slavery is the fact that more Nat Turner Rebellions did not occur: “What strikes us as the most remarkable thing in this matter is the horrible ferocity of these monsters.” The Richmond Enquirer August 30, 1831.
