Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For September 3, 2019 Mass shootings
like what occurred in El Paso and Dayton are heinous beyond belief but what’s
really worse is the daily gun violence of men of color shooting men of color in
Blue run cities like Chicago this Labor Day Weekend where 10 were killed and 38
wounded as the Mayor of Chicago blames Republicans for shootings and slams Cruz
in a twitter snit fit (in the midst of this carnage where is the outrage of the
left, handwringing of the MSM with interviews of the victims and their families
and the memorials on the scenes and clarion cries for more gun control instead
of the sounds of silence from the left as it is color on color shootings?); 25
bodies have been recovered from the fire that engulfed the MV Conception anchored
off waters near Santa Barbara with 9 missing; Hurricane Dorian has weakened to
a CAT 2 after devastating the Bahamas with severe flooding and some deaths as
it meanders slowly up the Florida Coast being followed by 3 storms in the Atlantic
forming up to become potential hurricanes (looks like Trump’s playing golf has
escaped the wrath of the Mayor of London for ignoring the danger); the beers
are jumping for joy in Alaska as Wal-Marts announced it was halting the sale of
handguns in Alaska, bowing to the PC anti-gun hysteria (in dense brush armed
only with a rifle coming upon a bear especially one with cubs is a death
sentence if not also packing a .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum (Alaskans vote Red so
to the left they are expendable); Booker desperate to gain traction has come up
with a $3 trillion green deal to make this country fossil fuel free in
producing electricity and billions of other goodies to woo voters (Spartacus
must have been hit helmet to helmet during his football days at Stanford);
Mayor De Blasio has discovered the perfect vacation at taxpayer expense by
running (crawling would be a more descriptive term) and incurring a stressful
and tiring 7 hour work month; on the hypocrisy front, Royals like our
politicians are not immune are not immune as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are
taking flack for using a private jet to attend a conference on making travel
eco-friendly (Royals have the same do as I say not as I do problem as our
elitist celebrities and politicians but at least Prince Harry admitted he could
do better); in Chicago through September 2, 2019, 1896 have been shot of whom 321
have died and in Baltimore with a fraction of Chicago’s population, 227 have
been murdered in Baltimore (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or
is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind
eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color?).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and
observances, a music link to The Black Eyed Peas, factoids of interest for
this day in history, the fact that you can enjoy the Alaskanpoet as opposed
to a pettypoet, and a relevant quote from Jacob Bronowski on Auschwitz, secure in the
knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like
Father’s Day, college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries,
you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized
poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You
need only contact me for details.
1. Telephone Tuesday—celebrated on the Tuesday following Labor Day to commemorate the
surge in telephone calls on that day as many businesses were closed on Monday
which usually has a surge in calls after a weekend.
2. National Bowling League Day—celebrating a game with initially
nine pins and played outdoors but expanded to ten when Connecticut outlawed it
as it was to gamble but the 10th pin and out of the legal shadows,
bowling leagues were established in the late 19th Century and
continue to today and flourish if you can stand the polyester shirts team
members often wear.
3. 2009 Number One Song— the number one song in 2009 on a long run of 14 weeks in
that position was “I Gotta Feeling” by The Black Eyed Peas. Here
is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSD4vsh1zDA&app=desktop. This
group is going strong selling albums, touring and having their music downloaded.
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “poetaster” which means a poet
writing contemptible verses which hopefully is not the word to use in describing
the Alaskan poet.
5. Cotton Is Cooler—celebrating the birth on this day in 1981 of noted British radio
and TV host Fearne Cotton who looks great in cotton or any other fabric.
On this day in:
a. 1879 British Envoy Sir Louis Cavagnari
and 72 Guides (regiment of British officers and Indian soldiers) died while
defending the British Residency in Kabul against attacks by Afghan soldiers.
b. 1941 Karl Fritsch, the deputy
commandant of Auschwitz, experimented with Zyklon B gas to kill Russian
prisoners but sadly is believed to have escaped the hangman’s noose by dying in
the Battle of Berlin on May 2, 1945.
c. 1954 German U-Boat 505 captured by the U.S. Navy in 1944 was
moved from a special dock in Chicago to its museum site at the Chicago Museum
of Science and Technology.
d. 1981 the Convention for Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
was adopted by the United Nations.
e. 2016 the U.S. and China which together amount to 40% of the
world’s carbon emissions signed the Paris Agreement regarding the reduction in
carbon emissions which the U.S., while leading the world in carbon emissions,
has announced its intention to withdraw prior to the 2020 elections.
Reflections on Auschwitz,
where the gassing of Russian POWs was just the tip of a beginning iceberg of
inhumanity: “This is the concentration camp and crematorium at Auschwitz. This
is where people were turned into numbers. Into this pond were flushed the ashes
of some four million people. And that was not done by gas. It was done by
arrogance. It was done by dogma. It was done by ignorance. When people believe
that they have absolute knowledge, with no test in reality, this is how they
behave.” Jacob Bronowski noted 20th Century British mathematician
and history and called by many as “one of the most celebrated intellectuals.”
