Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For June 5, 2017 The Middle East became a more complicated place as 5 Arab nations just severed diplomatic ties with Qatar, long suspected of supporting jihadist terror groups; MSNBC has solidified its credentials as a leader in nonobjective advocacy journalism with comments by one of its anchors Thomas Roberts that President Trump is trying to provoke a terrorist attack on the U.S. to further his political agenda (over the top Roberts who is gay and would last a New York second in sharia dominated countries before being thrown from a roof top); Venezuela continues to be the poster child of a failed nation due to socialism with reports of a growing number of women crossing the border into Columbia to work in brothels to earn money for the essentials of life and United Airlines announcing it will end flights into the collapsing country; CNN has not owned up to Resa Aslan being an employee (when does the Clinton News Network fire this pathetic hatemonger?); in a be careful what you post moment, Harvard has rescinded the admission letters to 10 members of the class of 2021 for sexually and racially offensive Facebook posts (now if we could only get Facebook and Twitter to crack down on Islamist recruiting in the same way the internet has cracked down on child pornography); anti-wall advocates like Senator Harris and Senator Feinstein should take a trip to Montgomery County, Ohio which experienced 349 overdose deaths in all of 2016 but as of June 1 of this year has suffered 360 such deaths (a wall would go a long way to stemming the flow of illegal drugs across our border with Mexico; Rahm Emanuel’s top priority for Chicago seems to be making it the premier sanctuary city in the country as the carnage continues unabated in June with total shootings in 2017 through June 4 increasing to 1429 and the death toll increasing to 247, a major tragedy that the powers to be in Chicago seem to completely ignore except for those fortunate enough to own a mortuary.
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Kitty Kallen, factoids of interest for this day in history, hoping you are not illuded this day, a relevant quote from Douglas Brinkley, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like Fathers’ Day, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. World Environment Day—created by the United Nations in 1974 to serve as a major platform to promote awareness of major environmental issues facing the planet like overpopulation, climate change, and wildlife loss (fortunately Trump pulled us out of the Paris Accords not on this day or the outcry would have been even more hysterical).
2. Festival of Popular Delusion Day—observed annually on this day since 1945, the first anniversary of the eve of D-Day when the Nazis could still have the delusion that the 1000 year Reich would last forever (not sure on this one as the Red Army in the first week of June 1944 was closing in on the borders of the Baltic Republics, Poland, Hungary and Romania getting ready to launch Operation Bagration).
3. 1954 Number One Song—the number one song in 1954 on a run of 9 weeks in that position was “Little Things Mean a Lot” by Kitty Kallen. Here is a performance by her of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C7SzKv2uLU At the height of her career she lost her voice while performing at the London Palladium and could not return to her craft for 4 years but then managed to record 13 top ten songs.
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “illude” which means to trick which is a skill too many of our politicians in the Swamp possess.
5. Courage to Adapt--celebrating the birth on this day in 1932 of Christy Brown, noted Irish author and poet who was paralyzed by cerebral palsy except for his left foot which is what he used to write such books as My Left Foot. Sadly, he choked to death while eating a lamb chop and died at the age of 49.
On this day in:
a. 1917 less than 30 days after the United States declared war on Germany, conscription began in the United States as this nation began to rapidly increase its army.
b. 1933 as the Great Depression swept across the U.S., the U.S. Congress by joint resolution took the nation off the gold standard, eliminating the right of creditors to demand that they be paid in gold.
c. 1947 in a speech at Harvard University, Secretary of State George Marshall called for aid to be given to the war ravaged countries of Western Europe; the Marshall Plan as it was ultimately known when passed into law in 1948 resulted in foreign aid of $13 billion over a four year period.
d. 1968 Robert Kennedy after winning the California primary that day was shot by Sirhan Sirhan after a victory speech at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles; he died the next day.
e. 1981 in its weekly “Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 5 people in Los Angeles had been diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia which infects only people with damaged immune systems; it was the first report of AIDS in this country.
Reflections on effect of the Marshall Plan: “Truman has become the patron saint of failed presidents because he left office with a 27 percent approval rating, and people were saying, 'To err is Truman,' yet look at what he did: the Marshall Plan, the creation of NATO, the Truman Doctrine.” Douglas Brinkley, noted American author and professor of history at Rice University.
