Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For June 22, 2017 Obamacare is like Rome, burning to the ground as insurers leave the individual market and the mandates still in place are strangling job creation and what we hear is not debate but the Nero like fiddling of Schumer and his lackeys joined by four Republican Benedict Arnolds—what a complete disaster; Schumer sound bites do not solve the problem nor do Pelosi’s as she faces increasing fire from Blues that her time is through (hope she stays as she is the Red turnout magnet); Congress will soon be missing in action for their recess that we mere mortal serfs would die for without doing their jobs of tax cuts, repealing and replacing Obamacare as it implodes in a fireball, and no work on infrastructure (Trump can do only so much with executive orders); on the North Korea front, disturbing news that a U.S. anti missile test failed as North Korea tested another rocket motor (when does the world and North Korea’s neighbors come to the realization that the only solution is regime change by any military means including assassination and that solution must be implemented while Kim Jong Un does not possess nuclear tipped missiles); on the PC university front Trinity College professor Johnny Williams went on a f* bomb tirade that because he was white Scalise should have been left to die (time for parents and donors to express their displeasure by sending their kids and dollars elsewhere as with idiots like him teaching there they are overpaying for the “education”; in further proof that must be drilled into the sick minds of jihadis that you may run but you cannot hide, a Canadian sniper shot and killed a terrorist in Iraq from a distance of 2.2 miles away;; Rahm Emanuel’s top priority for Chicago remains making it the premier sanctuary city in the country as the carnage continues unabated in June with total shootings in 2017 through June 21 increasing to 1646 and the death toll increasing to 292, a major tragedy that the powers to be in Chicago seem to completely ignore except for those fortunate enough to own a mortuary.
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Peter and Gordon, factoids of interest for this day in history, hoping that our politicians will not create billions more of imprests for wasteful purposes; a relevant quote from President Roosevelt on the G.I. Bill of Rights, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. National Onion Ring Day—in a day in which holidays and observances are almost nonexistent bemoaning another high fat treat we Americans are too prone to consume.
2. National Chocolate Éclair Day—celebrated by eating a favorite mid-19th Century French pastry invention made with choux dough as opposed to long johns make with donut dough.
3. 1964 Number One Song—the number one song in 1964 on a run of 1 week in that position was “A World Without Love” by Peter and Gordon. Here is a performance by the two British pop stars who were part of the British Invasion of “A World Without Love”: https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=mcafee&p=peter+and+Gordon#id=1&vid=f8f304add3eed94fa93d3e58702fcd87&action=click
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “imprest” which means a loan or advance of funds for a particular purpose.
5. Drums Along the Reservation—celebrating or bemoaning, depending on your political persuasion, the birth on this day in 1949 of a women who claimed to be Native American in order to further her political ambitions. Along with Sanders she is a rabid foe of banks and is symbolic of the leftist tilt of the Democratic Party.
On this day in:
a. 1941 in what will prove to be Germany’s biggest mistake in World War II, German forces launched Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union.
b. 1944 President Roosevelt signed into law The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 ( aka the G.I. Bill of Rights ) which dramatically increased the number of college and technically trained students from the ranks of returning veterans.
c. 1969 the Cuyahoga River running through Cleveland, Ohio caught fire which led to the passage of the Clean Water Act and the creation of Trump’s nemesis the Environmental Protection Agency.
d. 1984 Virgin Airways commenced operations with its first flight from London’s Gatwick Airport.
e. 1990 that symbol of the Cold War, Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, was disbanded.
Reflections on the least this nation needed to do for its returning veterans: “First, mustering-out pay to every member of the armed forces and merchant marine when he or she is honorably discharged; mustering-out pay large enough in each case to cover a reasonable period of time between his discharge and the finding of a new job.Second, in case no job is found after diligent search, then unemployment insurance if the individual registers with the United States Employment Service. Third, an opportunity for members of the armed services to get further education or trade training at the cost of their Government….”—President Franklin D. Roosevelt, “Fireside Chat,” July 28, 1943 Probably along with the Marshall Plan, the best investment this nation has ever made.
