Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For March 6, 2017 Finally in this dreary political drama some good news to
report as on March 6 after the ceremonial start on the streets of Anchorage,
the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on Earth commenced for real out of Wasilla
and on www.alaskanpoet.blogspot.com you will get race summaries and updates (being in Nome when the
dog teams start coming in should be on everyone’s bucket list but you have to
plan far in advance as the supply of hotel rooms sells out months in advance); Trump
signed a new executive order refining his earlier travel ban which hopefully
the leftist 9th Circuit will not try to block; hopefully a bill
replacing the disaster known as Obamacare will be introduced this week so the
Trump administration can focus all its energy on tax cuts which we desperately
need and which the Trump rally adding trillions of net worth to 401ks and IRAs
needs to continue (if the Blues block tax cuts which the head swamp denizen
Schumer seems to be heading and the Trump rally is sabotaged, every American
with a 401k or IRA should deluge his office with calls, emails and letters and
in an angry horde vote every Blue running for office in 2018 out of office); in
yet another example of the failure of the Obama administration to protect this
nation from a threat they would not name, the FBI announced they have 300 cases
of potential terrorist threats involving refugees admitted by Obama carte
blanche; in yet another example of Obama’s failed foreign policy toward Iran to
ink his pathetic nuclear deal, Iran tested two more banned ballistic missiles
(thank God we now have a president who is committed to rebuild our military as
the fanatics in Tehran and the lunatic in North Korea are showing all signs of
a path that will lead to the need for military action against them); when in
comes to immigration we know Mexico is not our friend as that nation is spending
$50 million to assist Mexican nationals to avoid deportation back to that
country (why does Mexico not want to take its citizens back and would prefer
they remain in the U.S.?); chilling news that Russia and Assad are continuing
to use chemical weapons against Syrian rebels); almost like a stuck record, the
carnage in Chicago continues unabated with total shootings in 2017 through
March 5 at 554, 99 of whom died with the first death in March raising the total
to 99 (God help those poor minorities being shot mostly by minorities when the
weather gets warmer and the shooters’ aim gets really better and there is more
daylight) and yet nothing absolutely nothing appears to be occurring to address
this blight on blacks and minorities which is what racism from a black mayor
really looks like.
As always,
I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Teresa
Brewer, factoids of interest for this day in history, a relevant quote from Paula
Deen, while always being luculent in your speaking and writing secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any
memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that
the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great
price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me
for details.
1. European Day of the
Righteous—created but the European Parliament
in 2012 to honor those who have stood up to totalitarianism and crimes against
humanity.
2. Dentists’ Day—celebrating the
work of dentists trying to protect our teeth without which eating and smiling
would be a very difficult prospect.
3. 1953 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1953 on a run of 5 weeks in that position “Til I Waltz Again with You”
by Teresa Brewer. Here is a recording of
her performing the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZkTC0YmfVY
A historical note is that Elvis Presley’s first public appearance which
occurred while being in the 12th grade involve him singing this
song. She recorded over 600 songs during an illustrious career that ended on
her death in 2007.
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “luculent” which means to clearly
express which is a trait totally lacking in the Swamp or the halls of the UN.
5. Whose
On First—celebrating the birth on this day in
1906 on one half of one of the greatest comic duos of all times Lou Costello
who deprived us of a lot of laughs by dying way too early of a heart attack at
age 53.
On this day
in:
a. 632 Muhammad gave his farewell sermon and died three months
later.
b. 1836 after a siege of 13 days by more than 3,000 Mexican
troops, the Alamo fell and all defenders including James Bowie and Davy
Crockett were slaughtered.
c. 1912 in a chilling forecast of what war would look like,
Italian airships cruising at 6000 feet dropped bombs on Turkish forces at
Janzur.
d. 1964 Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad consented to
Cassius Clay becoming Muhammad Ali
e. 1981 the most trusted newscaster at that time Walter Cronkite
signed off at CBS News for the last time.
Reflections on being
a dentist on Dentists’ Day: “I'm so glad I'm not a dentist. How many times does
someone say, 'Oh, Doc, it felt so good when you were drilling my teeth'? Never.
But when you give someone a wonderful cookie, you put a little of yourself in,
and you see someone's face light up - that's immediate approval.” Paula Deen,
noted celebrity chef and TV personality
