March 2, 2017 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Read Across America Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For March 2, 2017 Finally in this dreary political drama some good news to report, in a little over two days the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on Earth commences and on www.alaskanpoet.blogspot.com you will get race summaries and updates (being in Nome when the dog teams start coming in should be on everyone’s bucket list but you have to plan far in advance as the supply of hotel rooms sells out months in advance); Trump delivered a great speech that left the Blues glued to their seats sputtering that words don’t count actions matter and how dare he exploit a grieving Ms. Owens as a prop (short memories on Obama who was all speech and no action and who left us in the fiscal and foreign policy mess we find ourselves in); show me a Blue Senator who compromises and works with Trump to solve our problems and I will show you a Senator that has a chance to be reelected but for not being a Schumer puppet will probably face a Blue primary challenger; I would hate to be the executive at Penquin that agreed to a $68 million advance to the Obamas to write two books on their time in the White House given the fact that Simon and Shuster lost $10 million on the $14 million advance for HRC’s pitiful Hard Choices, especially if Trump and the Reds with a few courageous Blues collapse Obama’s legacy like a house of cards (here’s budget idea—tax any president’s memoir of his time in the White House at 90% as the material used is our federal records not his or hers); just when we thought it was safe to go into the water, news that Obama wants to get back into politics in a big way along with his biased politicized lackey Eric Holder; in a tell us something we don’t already know and why a wall is an essential ingredient in the war against the Mexican cartels, Comey indicated the Mexican cartels are behind the heroin epidemic sweeping the land; on the sex front, Sweden the rape capital of the world due to its influx of refugees is promoting the idea that workers should be paid to have sex at work and Spain has appointed a “sex czar” to counter low birth rates; almost like a stuck record, the carnage in Chicago continues unabated with total shootings in February at 212 up 12% over last year and shooting deaths in February at 46 up 39% over last year (God help those poor minorities being shot mostly by minorities when the weather gets warmer and the shooters’ aim gets really better and there is more daylight) and yet nothing absolutely nothing appears to be occurring to address this blight on blacks and minorities which is what racism from a black mayor really looks like.
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Red Foley, factoids of interest for this day in history, a relevant quote from Dr. Seuss, while making music by blowing through your flute’s fipple, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Read Across America Day—celebrating since 1997 the act of reading to your children, an act that should be performed each and every day to develop a habit that a person will follow for the rest of that person’s life.
2.  Old Stuff Day—celebrating the need to molt out of one’s same old stuff shell and embrace something new, a new hobby, new project, new friends or other activities as one can never grow if chained to the same old stuff.
 3. 1950 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1950 on a run of 4 weeks in that position “Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy” by Red Foley.  Here is a recording of him performing the song:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hECBzhZ8tYI
 4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “fipple” which is the end of the flute which one blows into to play it and if used in Scrabble will amaze your friends.                  5. Tearing Down A Wall—celebrating the birth on this day in 1931 of Mikhail Gorbachev, former premier of the Soviet Union who dismantled the Soviet Union an act which the current leader of Russian Putin wants more than ever to restore.
On this day in:
a. 1807 in a baby step against slavery, Congress passed legislation banning the importation of slaves into the country.
b. 1859 in a dark moment of our history, the Great Slave Auction lasting two days was held in Savannah, Georgia which resulted in the sale of 429 men, women, children and infants and netted the owners $303,850 ($8,349,563 in today’s dollars).
c. 1877 just two days before the scheduled date for inauguration, the House declared Rutherford Hayes to be president over Samuel Tilden who had won the popular vote in the preceding November.
d. 1917 Puerto Ricans were granted U.S. Citizenship.
e. 1989 12 EU nations agreed to end the production of chlorofluorocarbons by the turn of the century—a win for the ozone layer.
Reflections on reading by Dr. Seuss: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more things that you learn, the more places you will go.” I Can Read with My Eyes Shut.  Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and follow me) and follow my blogs.
