Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For July 18, 2016. Unfortunately still 186 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term and 227 days since hiding Hillary has held a formal press conference (she did have time to pander today to the NAACP (which has demanded that the federal government defund any police department which practices discrimination); the RNC opens today with protestors vowing to march on it; Kasich continues to act like a spoiled child who did not get his way by boycotting it. http://alaskanpoet.blogspot.com/2016/07/crybaby-kasich-boycotting-rnc-total.html ; the politically motivated Mosby is now 0-4 against the six officers she filed charges against and faces malicious prosecution charges; Erdogan has now arrested over 6,000 over the failed coup attempt and is on a path to create Turkey as an Islamic state and wants us to extradite a Muslim cleric Gulen who could reform Islam and purge it of its radical ways; even though this poet opposes most of Obama’s views I have to compliment him for his remarks and style while awarding a long overdue Congressional Medal of Honor to helicopter pilot Lt. Col Charles Kettles, Rtr.
On the sports front the World Anti-Doping Agency has called for the banning of not just track and field athletes but the banning of the entire Russian team from the Rio Summer Olympics (good for them) and New England safety Nate Ebner has made the U.S. Rugby Team. As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to the Ink Spots, factoids of interest, a relevant quote from General Motors while looking forward to enjoying a tasty serving of caviar, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. International Nelson Mandela Day—a UN observance since 2010 celebrating the birthday of Nelson Mandela and his accomplishments and struggles to rid South Africa of apartheid. 2. National Get Out Of The Doghouse Day—a whimsical holiday almost like the “Get out of jail free” card in Monopoly to use to mend your relationships with someone you care about but have done something wrong to or failed to do something that person expected of you. Candidly this observance should be celebrated simultaneously with National Forgiveness Day which is observed on June 26 which would make it far easier to get out of the proverbial doghouse.
3. 1946 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1946 on a run of ten weeks in that position “The Gypsy” by the Ink Spots. Here is a link to the Ink Spots performing the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG6g5CkyWAo
4. National Caviar Day—perfect time to enjoy some caviar especially since after the ban on sturgeon fishing in the Caspian Sea more likely than not the caviar you enjoy will have come from aquaculture in Italy.
5. Unsinkable Is Unthinkable—celebrating the birthday of socialite and activist Margaret Brown a survivor of the Titanic sinking and forever known as “the Unsinkable Molly Brown.”
On this day in:
a. 1290 King Edward I issued the Expulsion Proclamation banning all Jews numbering about 16,000 from Great Britain.
b. 1902 Willis Carrier created the first air conditioner at Buffalo, New York.
c. 1925 Adolf Hitler published Mein Kampf, a book that more people like Neville Chamberlin or Joseph Stalin should have read.
d. 1968 Intel was formed.
e. 2013 the city of Detroit with over $20 billion in debt and burdened with oppressive union contracts, declining population and businesses, and increasing numbers of abandoned buildings filed for bankruptcy, the largest municipal bankruptcy in our history.
It takes one to know one reflections: “GM is proud to call Detroit home and today’s bankruptcy declaration is a day that we and others hoped would not come. We believe, however, that today also can mark a clean start for the city.” General Motors press release Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and follow me) and follow my blogs.
