Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For January 10, 2016, 376 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term. Trust you enjoyed the Wild Card Playoffs Saturday and your Sunday is off to a great start with all or a majority of your  New Year’s Resolutions still being observed; as always, I hope you enjoy Sunday’s holidays and observances, a music link to Madonna; factoids of interest, a relevant column from Benito Mussolini, looking forward to enjoying some bittersweet chocolate, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Save The Eagle Day—commemorating efforts to protect eagles from extinction which have been somewhat successful as our national symbol was removed from the endangered species list but as a symbol of this country’s standing in the world is still threatened with trillions of debt thanks to Washington’s runaway spending habits.
2. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day—celebrating efforts to save money by saving on energy and reducing carbon emissions.
3. 1991 Number One S ong—celebrating the number one song in 1991 on a run of two weeks in that position Justify My Love by Madonna. Here is a link to Madonna performing Justify My Love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np_Y740aReI
4. National Bittersweet Chocolate Day—celebrating a chocoholic’s favorite day, especially since nutritionists have discovered the health benefits of dark chocolate.
5. If You Rebel You Need A Cause—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1939 of Sal Mineo who costarred with James Dean in Rebel without a Cause and who tragically was murdered by a pizza deliveryman in an alley in Los Angeles.
On this day in:
a. 49 B.C. Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon instituting a five year civil war won by legions supporting Julius Caesar and resulting in him being appointed dictator and marking the end of the Roman Republic.
b.1776 Thomas Paine published his pamphlet Common Sense, encouraging the American colonies to unite and seek independence from England.
c.1920 the Versailles Treaty went into effect, ending World War I.
d.1946 the first meeting of the U.N. General Assembly was held in London with 51 nations represented (today there are 193).
e.2013 in Mozambique at a funeral in which the local beer was consumed, but had been contaminated by either crocodile bile or the toxic plant foxglove, hospitalizing almost 200 and killing almost 80 people.
Reflections on the symbolic strength of eagles and why the League of Nations was doomed to fail when the American refused to join: “The League is very well when sparrows shout, but no good at all when eagles fall out.” Benito Mussolini
