Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For January 8, 2016, 378 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term. Trust you survived the volatility of the market yesterday and that your Friday is off to a great start with all or a majority of your New Year’s Resolutions still being observed; as always, I hope you enjoy Friday’s holidays and observances, a music link to Bobby Brown; factoids of interest, a relevant quote from Ronald Reagan, looking forward to enjoying some English toffee, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. War On Poverty Day—celebrating President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty announced on this day in 1964 during his State of the Union; sadly this was a war that we lost in terms of numbers although as a percent of the population the percentage rate of 15 percent is lower than the percentage of 19 percent in 1963, despite trillions of dollars spent.
2. World Typing Day—promoting the need to record one’s goals for the current year and reflect on the progress made or not made in the prior year and celebrated since 2011 but primarily in Malaysia.
3. 1989 Number One S ong—celebrating the number one song in 1989 on a brief run of one week in that position My Perogative by Bobby Brown. Here is a link to Bobby Brown performing My Perogative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cDLZqe735k
4. National English Toffee Day—celebrating another way to load up on calories consisting of caramelized butter and sugar—ugh.
5. Only One King—commemorating the birthday on this day in 1935 of the King, Elvis Presley who died way too early due to abuse of his body at the age of 42.
On this day in:
a.1675 the first commercial company chartered in North America, the New York Fish Company was formed.
b.1835 proving that the proclivity of politicians to spend more than they take in has been ingrained in this nation since its founding, the U.S. National Debt for the first and only time is reduced to 0.
c.1980 in a blow for gender equality, the NCAA voted to hold Women’s NCAA Championships in five sports.
d.1992 in a really embarrassing moment in the etiquette of proper diplomatic manners, President George Bush became ill and threw up in the Japanese Prime Minister’s lap.
e.2011 a mentally disturbed gunman Jared Loughner attempted to assassinate Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford during her appearance at a Safeway in Casas Adobes, Arizona and severely wounded her in the head, wounded twelve others and killed six.
