Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For January 2, 2016, 384 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term. Trust you enjoyed watching the Rose Bowl Parade and especially enjoyed watching Stanford destroy Iowa and watch the artistry of the man who should have won the Heisman, Christian McCaffrey, and the second day of 2016 is off to a great start with all your New Year’s Resolutions still being observed; as always, I hope you enjoy Saturday’s holidays and observances, a music link to Hall and Oates, factoids of interest, a relevant quote from Isaac Asimov, looking forward to enjoying a few cream puffs, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Science Fiction Day—celebrating on the birthday of Isaac Asimov the genre of literature known as science fiction which over the years has predicted in fiction the reality of such things as space travel.
2. National Buffet Day—celebrating what has to be a great contrarian observance as most Americans’ New Years’ Resolutions involve the goal to lose weight which is impossible to do if one’s meal plan includes a buffet which in almost all cases is an all you can eat.
3. 1983 Number One S ong—celebrating the number one song in 1983 on a run of four weeks in that position Maneater by Hall and Oates. Here is a link to Halls and Oates performing Maneater: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRYFKcMa_Ek
4. National Cream Puff Day—celebrating one of the better temptations like an all you can eat buffet to blow your lose weight resolutions.
5. Dang Me—commemorating the birthday on this day in 1936 of Roger Miller, a great county music icon, who was danged by cigarettes and died too early with throat cancer.
On this day in:
a. 533 Vercunius became Pope John II, the first pope to change his name on elevation to the papacy.
b. 1900 American statesman John Hay announced the Open Door policy with respect to China.
c. 1020 in an earlier reaction to terror and suspension of the Bill of Rights, the second of what became to be known as the Palmer Raids occurred with 6,000 anarchists and leftists being arrested and detained without trial.
d. 1967 Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the governor of California.
e. 2013 in a classic oxymoron when it comes to dealing with taxpayers, the American Taxpayers Relief Act was signed into law.
Reflections on science fiction: “Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today - but the core of science fiction, its essence has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all.” Isaac Asimov Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and join 165 growing followers and please follow me) and follow my blogs.
