1. World Environment Day —created by the U.N. in 1972 to promote awareness of the need to protect and preserve the environment.
2. Festival of Popular Delusions Day—not sure where this observance came from but suspect it originated to celebrate the anniversary of June 5, 1944 the eve of D-Day and the last day of delusion of the Nazis that they would win World War II even as the Russians were surging toward Germany-the line between a dream and a delusion is often a fine one.
3. 1957 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1957 on an five week run Love Letters in the Sand by Pat Boone, popular pop singer of the 50’s and early 60’s with sales of over 45 million albums to his credit. l. 4. National Cheese Day—celebrating one of mankind’s first ways of preserving food (along with bread, wine, jerky, and beer).
5. Visible Man with Invisible Hand—celebrating not a sequel to the movie Invisible Man but rather the birthday on this day in 1723 of Scottish economist Adam Smith, author of The Wealth of Nations and considered the Father of Capitalism.
On this day in:
a. 1851 Harriet Beecher Stowe’s serial Uncle Tom’s Cabin began a ten month run in abolitionist paper New Era.
b. 1883 the first regularly scheduled Orient Express departed Paris for Istanbul.
c. 1933 the U.S. Congress by joint resolution in response to the Great Depression took the government off the gold standard, nullifying the right of creditors to demand payment of debts in gold.
d. 1956 Elvis Presley performed his hit single Hound Dog on the Milton Berle Show showcasing his suggestive and for the 50’s provocative hip movements.
e. 1968 after winning the California Primary, and giving a speech to supporters at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, thanking them for support and congratulating Don Drysdale who had just broken the record for scoreless innings was mortally shot moments later by Sirhan Sirhan.
f. 1981 the Centers for Disease Control announced the occurrence in Los Angeles of the first five cases of a rare pneumonia found in people with reduced immune systems; these were the first known reported cases of the results of persons infected with AIDS.
Reflections on World Environment Day: “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” – Mahatma Gandhi Not sure when Gandhi made this statement but even with the additional billions added to the population of the Earth, the statement is still true today.
