       1. International Young Eagles Day—celebrating not the young eagles who survive in the wild long enough to fly from the nest, but the efforts since 1992 of the International Experimental Aircraft Association to expose young children to the joys of flight; the numbers of kids who have flown a plane is in excess of 2,000,000.

       2. National Weed Your Garden Day—celebrating that chore that even the most ardent gardener detests—weeding their garden—but a needed task if you want to enjoy the fruits of one’s garden, from flowers, to herbs, to spices and a whole host of vegetables and legumes. A silver lining for those living in California who really detest the chore, the drought may force one to pull out the plants and replace them with cacti or stones.      

        3. 1965 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1965 on a one week run, a great 60’s classic, I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) by the Four Tops, a black pop group that stayed together for four decades and were prominent in creating and defining the Motown sound.         4.  World Gin Day—celebrating  since 2008 a spirit first made in Holland during the 17^th Century used in addition to the obvious as a medicine for stomach aliments.

        5.  Center Square Day—celebrating the birthday in 1926 of comedian Paul Lynde who anchored the center square of the long running Hollywood Squares and unfortunately battled alcohol and drug abuse and homophobia and died too early at 56 of a heart attack.
On this day in:                                           

       a. 1774 in a slavers hit the road moment, the Rhode Island colony became the first colony in British North America to ban the importation of slaves.

       b. 1917 German Gotha bombers bombed London in the deadliest air raid of the war killing 162 citizens and wounding over 400 others.    

       c. 1944 in a chilling moment heralding the advance of technology, the first of the over 9500 V-1 rockets launched against England during World War II, were launched against London; of the 11 rockets launched only 4 hit the targets.

          e. 1971 the New York Times began publication of the Pentagon Papers, discovered and leaked by Daniel Ellsberg; great reading if you want an eye opener on a systematic attempt by our government to systematically conceal and deceive the public and Congress about the war in Vietnam.                          

Chilling reflections on potential government action: “If there's another 9/11 or a major war in the Middle-East involving a U.S. attack on Iran, I have no doubt that there will be, the day after or within days an equivalent of a Reichstag fire decree that will involve massive detentions in this country.” Daniel Ellsberg
