       1. World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought—as California is in the midst of yet another year of drought, at least in terms of observances we are not alone; the lack of fresh water in the decades to come may be the major crisis of our time.
       2. National Stewart’s Root Beer Daycelebrating the introduction by Frank Stewart in 1924 of Stewart’s root beer which by many has been touted as the best root beer in the world.
        3. 1969 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1969 on a five week run, Get Back by the Beatles. With an apology for audio only but at least with no ad to endure, here is a link to the Beatles performing Get Backhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzRRAgAjGTo
        4.  National Apple Strudel Day—celebrating another great desert.
        5.  Serendipity When It Comes to Food Is a Great Idea—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1903 of Ruth Graves Wakefield, the inventor of the chocolate chip cookie after observing that dropping chocolate chips into her cookie dough did not melt them only making them softer and operator of the Toll House Inn, noted for its fine self created deserts.
On this day in:
       a. 1631 Mumtaz Mahal died during childbirth; her husband  Mughai emperor Shah Jahan spent the next 17 years constructing her mausoleum the Taj Mahal.
       b. 1885 the Statute of Liberty arrived in New York City harbor.
     c. 1901  the College Board created its first standardized test to evaluate high school seniors, the forerunner to the SAT.
       d. 1971 President Nixon declared a War on Drugs, a war which we have obviously lost.
       e. 1972 in what would prove the axiom that all politicians seem to continue to forget that the cover-up is always worse than the crime, five operatives from the White House were caught burglarizing the office of the Democratic National Party, the first steps in the Watergate Scandal that brought down the presidency of Richard Nixon after his landslide victory over Senator McGovern.
       f. 1994 following a televised freeway chase watched by millions OJ Simpson was arrested for the murder of his wife Nichole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.
Reflections on the Watergate Scandal from President Nixon: “You must pursue this investigation of Watergate even if it leads to the president. I'm innocent. You've got to believe I'm innocent. If you don't, take my job.” Richard M. Nixon Fortunately we did and his obstruction of justice and holding himself above the law meant he had to resign.
