       1. Founding of AA Day —observing and celebrating the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous on this day in 1935 in Akron, Ohio (the date of Dr. Bob’s last drink) by Dr. Bob and Bill Wilson.
       2. National Ball Point Pen Day—honoring the filing of a patent for the ball point pen by the Bíró brothers, László and György, on this day in 1943.
        3. 1962 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1962 on a five week run I Can’t Stop Loving You by the Ray Charles. Here is a link to the Ray Charles performing I Can’t Stop Loving You with an apology to a RAM truck commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_7iRVtxui8
        4.  National Herbs and Spices / Iced Tea/ and Black Cow Days—celebrating freedom from bland and tasteless food/ a great summer cooling drink and last but not least, a root beer float.
        5.  Roses Are Red, Violets Are Walls—celebrating not a new strain of flowers but rather the birthday of Violet Oakley on this in 1874, the first female muralist to receive a public commission to paint a mural on public property, in this case the Pennsylvania State Capitol.
On this day in:
       a. 1793 Le Jardin des Plantes opened in Paris and one year became the first public zoo.
       b. 1854 the first class of the United States Naval Academy graduated.
       c. 1963 the Equal Pay Act of 1963 banning wage discrimination based on gender was signed into law by President Kennedy. 52 years later the Blues still believe there is a war on women based on alleged gender pay inequality.
        d. 1977 the Apple II went on sale.
            e. 2003 Spirit, the first NASA Mars Exploration Rover was launched; it successfully landed on January 4, 2004 and explored the Martian surface until it became stuck in 2009 and finally stopped transmitting to Earth on March 22, 2010. If you are ever in Pasadena, you should plan ahead to visit JPL where a model of Spirit and other unmanned space crafts are on display.
Reflections on alcoholics: “...one of the primary differences between alcoholics and nonalcoholics is that nonalcoholics change their behavior to meet their goals and alcoholics change their goals to meet their behaviors.”
 Alcoholics Anonymous
Astute observation if applied to comparing politicians and nonpoliticians might conclude: “nonpoliticians change their behavior to meet their goals and politicians change the rules to meet their behaviors.”
