1. National Hug Day—celebrating one of the acts since 1986 that is unique to being a human being; hug someone today!
2. Errol Barrow Day—celebrating in a great island to visit Barbados, a former prime minister of Barbados who was instrumental in moving that island to independence from England.
3. 1990 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song on this day in 1990 How Am I Supposed to Live Without You by Michael Bolton—a song that all spurned lovers should hum each day.
4. New England Clam Chowder Day—celebrating a great bowl of soup especially if the restaurant does not load up on the potatoes and skimp on the clams but does add a bit of bacon per my mother’s recipe.5. Why National Disc Jockey Day Should Be Today—Why on the 20th we celebrated National Disc Jockey Day is a mystery when on this day in 1938 one of the true icons of radio DJ’s Wolfman Jack was born and whose gravelly voice was immortalized in American Graffiti.
On this day in
a. 1908 New York City passed the Sullivan Ordinance, making it illegal for women but not men to smoke in public, an act which the mayor vetoed so women could join the ranks of the victims of lung cancer caused by smoking.
b. 1915 Kiwanis International was founded in Detroit.
c. 1976 supersonic air travel began with the first Concorde flights from London to Bahrain and Paris to Rio flights.
d. 1977 President Jimmy Carter pardoned all Vietnam War draft evaders.
e. 1999 the House of Representatives voted 328 to 28 to reprimand the Speaker of the House Newt Ginrich for ethics violations arising out of tax fraud. He became the first Speaker of the House to be so reprimanded yet typical of politicians had after resigning from the house had the audacity to unsuccessfully run for president.
