Ridley's Believe It Or Not—January 2, 2015: Let’s hear it for the PAC 12 and Oregon’s total destruction of the Seminole yesterday at the Rose Bowl and kudos to those who are still after two days adhering to their New Year’s Resolutions. As always, I hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and a relevant quote from Woodrow Wilson, with a smile on your face, looking forward to a buffet today, blessed with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. 1. Happy Mew Year For Cats Day —for someone whose nickname is the Big Dog difficult to give felines their holiday due, but today is a day for cat owners to celebrate their felines, especially if their litter box is clean and fresh smelling.
2. Personal Trainer Awareness Day—celebrating the critical person you need to keep that New Year’s Resolution to lose weight by going to the gym—a personal trainer.
3. 1972 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song on this day in 1972 Brand New Key rd by Melanie (do not remember this one).
4. Robots Will Rule Day—celebrating not the ever increasing number of robots in the work place but rather the birthday on this day in 1920 of a very prolific science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, author of I Robot among many other great works.
5. National Buffet Day—a food holiday that should be celebrated only if one has worked out at the gym with one’s personal trainer and burned up copious amounts of calories.
On this day in
a. 1920 in another dark day for this nation’s tolerance of immigrants the second wave of arrests in what became known as the Palmer Raids after the then U.S. Attorney General began in numerous cities across the country targeting communists and anarchists and arresting over 3000 immigrants, many of whom were held without trial for months.
b. 1967 Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the governor of California (yes in a galaxy far, far away we used to have the ability to be a Red state).
c. 1971 in a blow against the leading cause of death in the U.S., cigarette advertising was banned on television.
d. 1974 to the frustration of motorists across this country, President Nixon in response to the OPEC embargo signed legislation lowering the speed limit on highways to 55 miles per hour—just another reminder of why we need Keystone XL in order to be independent of machinations by OPEC.
e. 1983 the musical “Annie” closed on Broadway after 2,377 performances.
Reflections on the Palmer Raid and the intolerance of immigrants that has been around for some time: “Hyphenated Americans have poured the poison of disloyalty into the very arteries of our national life. Such creatures of passion, disloyalty and anarchy must be crushed out" President Woodrow Wilson With ideas like that no wonder immigration reform is going to be a difficult process. Please enjoy the 140 character poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and join 150 growing followers and please follow me) and follow my blogs.
