January 1 History Public Domain Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—January 1, 2015:    Happy New Year and I trust your resolutions for the New Year were framed in a fashion that you will be able to achieve them and, as always, I  hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and a relevant quote from Brad Paisley,  with a smile on your face, looking forward to ringing in the New Year, blessed with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient.  You need only contact me for details.
       1. New Year’s Day —celebrating world wide the beginning of the New Year and with fireworks and unfortunately too many traffic fatalities from celebrants celebrating in excess who may be nursing hangovers and miss one of the great floral spectacles of the United States—the annual Rose Bowl Parade.
        2. Global Family Day—celebrated as a day of peace and sharing on the first day of the year.
       3. 1971 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song on this day in 1971 My Sweet Lord by George Harrison.
        4. Public Domain Day—celebrated by readers and bemoaned by authors and artists as the day when a copyrighted material goes into the public domain and royalties are no longer payable.
         5. Bloody Mary Day—For those who celebrated National Champagne Day on New Year’s Eve not in moderation, a way to rejoin the human race and soothe the hangover.
On this day in
      a. 1808 in a better late than never moment, the further importation of slaves into the United States was banned.
      b. 1863 Daniel Freeman became the first person to file a claim for a 160 acre homestead in Nebraska under the Homestead Act.
      c.  1892 Ellis Island opened and began processing immigrants to the United States.
      d.  1908 for the first time a ball was dropped in New York City’s Time Square at midnight to signify the start of the New Year, a tradition which continues today albeit in a more extravagant fashion each year.
       e. 1954 NBC telecasted the first coast to coast NTSC color TV broadcast of the Rose Bowl Parade.
Reflections on the New Year about to start: “Tomorrow, is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one.” Brad Paisley, noted American singer, songwriter and musician. Better yet, make it a great one.
