Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History-May 8, 2014 V-E Dayotry;

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—May 8, 2014:    As always, after some searching, I found these holidays worthy of mention here or celebrating in culinary fashion, to go with the factoids and quote to enjoy as you are getting ready to celebrate Mother’s Day and are stressing out over what to get and how to celebrate the day.
             1. World Fair Trade Day—celebrating since 2004 organizations around the world committed to 10 principles of fair trade, including no child labor and safe working conditions.
             2. Red Cross Day—celebrated on the birthday, May 8, of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross since 1922 to honor the contribution of one of the great charitable organizations in existence—the go-to-charity and relief organization in times of wars and disasters.
              3. V-E Day—celebrating victory in World War II over Germany on this day in 1945 after almost six long years of war.
             4. National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day—definitely a good day to plan for steps to take care of your pets in case of a disaster as they like small children cannot plan for themselves and disasters will wreck havoc on most animals.
            5.  National Coconut Cream Pie Day—one food item that has two uses—one as a dessert to enjoy and the other ala Soupy Sales to be used in the act of pieing someone, preferably a disliked politician, in the face.
On this day in:
              a. 1980 the World Health Organization announced the eradication of small pox.
              b. 1984 in a tit-for-tat moment the Soviets announced a boycott of the Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles in retaliation over the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow due to the Soviet’s war in Afghanistan.
              c. 1987 Senator Gary Hart seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination as President dropped out of the race due to the Donna Rice Affair.
One of history’s great bargains on the communicable disease front: “In 1967 the world health community launched a global effort to eradicate smallpox. It took a coordinated, world wide effort, and cost $130 million. By 1977 smallpox had disappeared.” Liya Kebede, noted Ethiopian born model and maternal health advocate.
